I have the V6 and most of the time it seems to have more than enough power and I am from a high performance background.
The problem is the tuning and the lack of timing advance and poor fuel management controls mopar installed.
After driving the V8 I believe both the V6 & V8 have the bogging problem, which is a tuning error from mopar, the timing is too retarded, air fuel is incorrect and this equates to poor throttle response and hesitation at times. If you are lucky enough to hit the sweet spot, the V6 goes really well- but this is only like 50% of the time. Most will notice also, that at full throttle the V6 revs climb very slowly, mostly due to the timing issues.
One thing is for sure- once an after market, computer tuning device comes out for the V6, eliminating the throttle lag issues, I am sure this engine will scream.
Once the true potential of the V6 is unleaed then we will have to concern ourselves with whether or not the transmission can handle that additional amount of power in 1st and 2nd gear.
At the Detroit show Chrysler is one of the very few if not the
only company showing V8's, turbo charging and downsizing is happening,
it's kind of sad but true...
Wow! a few years ago we were dancing in the streets if a V8 put out anything over 250 HP. Now some whine that a V6 at 290 HP is slow(?) and gets (in my case) 18+ MPG in mostly Los Angeles traffic . . . . Good Grief! And all this is a 2 1/4 Ton 4 Wheel Drive Truck . . . I don't know about the rest of you guys . . . but I'm suitably impressed with my V6!
I'm with you. I remember just a few years ago, GM was touting the new V6's putting out 200 hp! And Ford had a 235 hp V8 option for the Explorer.
I have the V6. and I drive it like I stole it most of the time. I never have a problem getting off the lights and putting a half a block between me and everyone else. I drive on the highways 85 and 90 mph with no trouble and I pass cars and trucks to be in front and can stay there as long as I want to. And because it's the V6, I get 18-19 mpg's all the time. So I actually can drive it hard, with out any thought to gas mileage. Especially in the city. Everyone else just drives to dang slow. I can't tell you how many times I've driven in a 45 mph zone and for whatever reason, people are going 35 mph and just happy as can be. I need to be places and get things done. The V6 pulls me around them and down the road no problem.
So my question, which I'll ask the V8 owners again, when you say how slow the V6 was for you and that's why you needed the V8, what is the V8 faster than? I'd be willing to challenge any V8 owner to a race across town. We'll see how all that extra HP and Torque help you,,,or not.
I'd say hp is not what really matters, torque does and low end torque is a great thing to have and there's no replacement for displacement.
V6 with both compressor and turbo would be nice but my company wouldn't put that engine on the company car list...
I don't know why people bother challenging me in the city. Check my plate buddy or woman, it says 2QK4U2C and you'll have dual exhaust in your face before you can figure out what that means. bu-bye vrooooooooooooooom!
Sure, but the sad part is that even my 4cyl 2.0T VW Passat does Vmax (km/h): 232 or 145mph and 0-100 km/h (sec.) 7.8, admittingly this is only relevant on the Autobahn but nethertheless technology will win long term over relatively old school V8 stuff. Still a dream of mine, I think realities will prevail. Canada only has that much oil
Today I drove a Limited v6 and a used '11 Overland v8 (dealer had no new ones).
Although the v6 had plenty of power, the v8 felt "stronger" and had me grinning!
My decision is to go with a Limited: Stone White, black leather, v8, 20's and 730N.
Personally, you can't go wrong with either, but I'll take the 8!
Test drove both the V-8 and the V-6. If I was hauling a lot I would buy the V-8 (only would haul a 3500lb trailer occasionally) but I have an old work truck for hauling. The V-6 seems plenty so ended up ordering that. Plus the wife was tired of getting 16mpg in the Surburban. The torque was nice in the V-8, but wasn't all that for a daily driver. And I couldn't justify spending 60K on the SRT8 since I have a Charger SRT8 sitting in the garage. Wife would have been mad.
When I set my cruise control in hilly central Connecticut, the HEMI has enough torque to hold a gear longer than the Pentastar would. I drive between altitudes of 300 feet and 1,500 feet fairly often, so this really helps my driving experience. What do the guys who regularly drive in REAL mountains think?
I'm at 1700 miles in my 3.6, and it's going to be my mountain ride. I've done 3 Denver to Summit County ski trips in it over the last month, and I like it. Ski traffic can be pretty brutal, with a lot of Type A people pushing hard on snowy curvy steep grades. With a little bit of finesse on my part I can ease it up without a downshift, or I can make it kick down one or two without rowing it myself. When the RPMs are in the upper range I feel like there's enough there to do whatever I might want to do, short of blasting by someone, and I don't need to push it that hard very often. My last mountain cars were Euro turbos. True, I don't feel as 'in command of the situation' as I did with that boost always available, but overall Im liking the engagement and responsiveness of the 3.6 in the Rockies just fine. With the V6 option available I wouldn't be happy burning 15-40% more fuel even though I can afford it. No regrets.
I am disappointed with my V6 because I see very poor gas mileage. I mostly drive in downtown Washington DC and average 9-12 mpg. I have never gotten above 20mpg and I try to keep it in ECO as much as possible. Any suggestions from those who are getting good mileage? I have a '12 Overland. Thanks!
I have a 2012 3.6L with 4 Wheel Drive (You didn't say if yours was 2 or 4 Wheel Drive) with 2,800 miles on it. So far I've been averaging right at 18 MPG. I keep every receipt and enter it in an excel spreadsheet. So this isn't the EVIC calculation (which seems to be about 1 MPG on the optimistic side of the equation). This 18 MPG is what I'm really getting and that's even in about 90% in Los Angeles commute traffic. At a steady 70 MPH it looks like I'm getting about 25 or 26 MPG (EVIC - 1 MPG) which I think is really quite good for this vehicle. I also find that, for me, the performance from this V6 is much more than adequate.
Thanks guys for the suggestions. I have the 4x4 and usually drive it in sport mode. All my tires are inflated properly. It's just a bit weird that I am the only one getting such bad gas mileage. I do pretty much all your suggestions except using a speed buffer because then someone just fills the gap. I am also getting it from the dash readout so I must really be at 8mg!
My main problem is that in order to drive home, it takes me sometimes up to 30 minutes to travel 1.5 miles. And i dont drive too much on the highway to bring up my average. Too bad I can't improve idling gas mileage haha. The only solution is to bike my commute, but then I don't get to enjoy my new Jeep. Oh the dilemma!

My work truck (dodge 2500) has the hemi so I am used to the engine. I had planned on getting the V6 anyway due to gas mileage reasons but I did test drive a couple of Hemi's (a 2wd and a 4wd). The V8 is nice but the gearing really hurts it as well as the V6. My work truck has much more get up and go but it is geared for heavy towing and hauling. At first I was a little dissapointed with the V6 when I first drove it home but 500 miles later I have learned how it works and have learned where to put the throttle to wake it up and am much happier. That V6 moves 5,000 pounds better than my 4.8 V8 chevy does!
I like the v6. I get 21-23 mpg around town. Wife gets 18-20mpg. Highest I got was 26 mpg over 500 miles
Had it in a muddy field goin up a bank, towing a trailer spinning all four trac light blinking, slung grass and mud on the roof.
Didn't want to replace 16 plugs every 30k.
Didn't want 19 mpg rated highway.
I said I would never buy a sub 20 mpg auto.
My only complaint is the gear ratios. 4 speed Plus another od instead of a true design 5 speed. But after some adjustment I have gotten use to it.
I still dislike automatics
Hell my daily has 95 hp carbed 4x4 5 speed manual, the other is a 39 hp 4 speed motorcycle So the jeep has plenty of power lol.
I got the v6 and have no regrets. The power is good enough for me, and the gas mileage was what made the choice. I'm averaging 18mpg, and got 24 avg. on a 500 mile trip. I came from a Chevy Tahoe that was getting 13.5mpg avg, so this was a big improvement for me. I had a ram 1500 with the 5.7, so I am familiar with that engine.
What puzzles me is why people care so much about what others do to their own vehicles. Or what they do with their own stuff and lives for that matter. No offense guys, but it grinds my gears. If someone wants a V6 and wants to invest in getting a dual exhaust look, so be it. Posers or not, it's their choice and I don't think any of us have the right to make judgment on other people's choices. If it in any way effected me then I'd get pissed, but I don't see how this should effect anyone. I have been subscribed and following this thread for a while and it's slowly turning into a "my engine choice is better than yours". I am a Hemi owner and I love it to death. I am willing to put the money on the gas mileage (granted, gas is dead cheap here).
I don't mean to be rude Snipe (you're not the only one, this whole thread has comments like that here and there) but what if you got SRT8 wheels for your Hemi? Would that make you a poser? I think not.
Why is it okay for HEMI owners to try and mimic SRT8s but it's not okay for V6 owners to go for the dual exhaust look? It's something that is subjective to taste and doesn't effect anyone but the owner of the vehicle. I've seen hemi owners try to get srt8 bumpers, fenders, flares, wheels etc... mind you, the performance stats between the v6 and hemi are a lot closer than the performance stats of the hemi and the srt8.

I have the 3.6L and I don't have any regrets. Pulls my sled fine. Almost to 1200 miles (1175) on 3 tanks of gas. I will hit 1200 before I refill. A tank is around $80 with mixed city/hwy driving.
Well, I haven't ordered my Jeep-yet....
I "wanted" the V8, but I'm agonizing over the mileage....
I feel that if I get the V6, I'll have that little voice saying "you coulda had a V8".
Then again, with gas prices (Toronto) @ $1.25/L, they'll only go up....
300+ miles per tank vs 500+ miles per tank is a big difference.
I've asked about 4 dealers, and they've all really been selling V6 Limiteds and Overlands. I don't know if that's really due to allocation, or customer preference...
I plan on renting a V6 Laredo from a local Budget, in-order to get a feel for the V6 and it's mileage.
I need an extended test drive before I make up miy mind.
The investment of $100.00 or so for the rental will be well worth it if it helps me to decide.
^^^ I won't be using my 5000LB SUV to be catching you. It's not a race car. I got a two seater of Italian origin that I use when I wanna blow by people!
