Re: V6 or Hemi??? Anybody driven both???

Did it sound something like this:

?

This, of course, is Dodge RAM and exhaust sound itself is louder then it is on GC (I assume). But then ticking on GC would be even more noticeable.

I may just go with V6 because of this

Yes that is pretty much the sound. I don't really get how it can be this widespread and be a "problem"...seems like Chrysler would have figured something out by now, especially as it seems they are spending a ton on warranty costs? Do the 6.1L Hemis in the SRT vehicles have this same tick or is it just in the 5.7L?

Re: V6 or Hemi??? Anybody driven both???

The ticking sound I believe has something to do with direct injection. On my 2007 Lexus GS350 it also has that ticking sound and its said to be normal. All of the Lexus's do it.

That said, I really didn't notice much difference in the V6 and V8. The V6 had more of a growl to it, I heard no growl at all on the V8. That is probably because the V6 is struggling more.

Honestly I would like to get whichever is more reliable and less problematic, but only time will tell.

This poll relates to Dodge RAM:

It seems that it is considered "normal" and not a sign for impending problems but some people are still annoyed with the sound.

Re: V6 or Hemi??? Anybody driven both???

I drove both at the dealership Saturday. I'd say that both were definitely adequate. The 3.6 wasn't a slug by any means, but you could tell it was working a lot harder than the 5.7. The 5.7 was basically loafing the whole time until I really got on it. Then it seemed to say "You want to go? I'll show you go!"

The V6 is more than adequate to do what you have to do. Plus you don't have to deal with the gas of the 5.7L

Re: V6 or Hemi??? Anybody driven both???

Living at 5,000 ft above sea level, and going up to 8,000 frequently, there was no way I was going for a non-turbo V6. I test drove both, and noticed much better acceleration, and less shifting and struggling with the V8. I also thought the V8 sounded better (nice growl when you get on it)! The V8 also has the towing capacity I need.... In our Suburban, we bought the smaller of the two V8s hoping to get better gas mileage. BIG MISTAKE. We only average 13.4 (when not towing), and it struggles to pull our boat over the mountain passes around here. We live up a pretty steep hill, and I think the bigger V8 would probably have gotten the same mileage or better just because it would have struggled less. I'm not making that mistake again!

In your case you clearly seem to NEED Hemi.

Re: V6 or Hemi??? Anybody driven both???

I'm going to be towing up near the 7200 lb limit on occasion....so the Hemi is the solution for my towing needs. I wonder if the lower gear ratio or 18" tires on the Off Road package is going to hurt my highway mileage very much?

I will be towing this on occasion.

3600lbs for the Jeep and 2000 lbs for the trailer... I clearly need the V8.

The 18" tires in the off road package won't hurt your mileage at all- outside diameter of all the various tire/wheel packages spec'd on the WK2 are extremely close to one another.
