v6 towing question

Hey guys I'm been searching everywhere for this info and I can't find it. For the WK2 V6, is the tow rating 5000 lbs or 5400 lbs? It's shown as 5000 lbs on the jeep website, but I've heard from the dealership and a few members on this forum and another jeep forum that it is suppose to be 5400 lb with the tow II package. It was said that the GCVW is suppose to be like 10,400 instead of 8,900. I'm thinking about getting a 2012 V6 by the end of the year for some towing, maybe 4500 max and I'm thinking the V8 may be over kill for 1-2 times per year towing, plus I like the mpg the v6 is getting.

Any solid info? The search didn't really pull up anything. Thx in advance.

Re: v6 towing question

Think the towing difference is between 2WD and 4WD.

Re: v6 towing question

Love our V6, but if we were to be towing more than 3000 pounds with any regularity we'd have gotten the Hemi, especially in hilly terrain. Yeah, the V6 can pull 5k+, but you wouldn't want to.

What about non regularity, maybe 2-3 times a year? I would love the hemi, but the plug maintenance every 30k and mpg of the hemi has me a bit worried.

Kinda where we're at. We occasionally tow log splitters, maybe will go for a U-Haul once or twice during ownership, that sort of thing. But these are lightweights.

I guess it depends on the frequency, distance and terrain. It's a judgement call, and if you really want to know you might try a rental V6 and add (and later remove) a U-Haul hitch -- not all that costly -- and decide for yourself. Sure beats spending big bucks and coming out disappointed.

You can tow - pull -with a golf cart the problem is stopping . If towing a travel trailer is a concern one should consider a 3/4 ton truck for safety first! GC is to not suited to tow a TT 4000 lbs and over don't care what they rate it for its my family in the car and its not safe V6 or V8.

With fifth wheel if you really want to do it right. But he is just looking for now-and-again towing like many of us do with our GCs.

I'm just needing occasional towing, maybe a few times a year. The V8 would handle a 4k lb trailer just fine and with the V8 setup you could probably tow 7500+ easy, but I like the mpg of the V6. Since this would be a daily driver for me I'm looking more at mpg then being able to tow much more then 5k lbs. I could stay within the 5k lb tow max limit without a problem of needed something bigger, or I would go with the V8, but I didn't see the need of getting a bigger engine and getting low mpg if I really didn't need it.

With trailer brakes your argument is mute.

It is perfectly safe to tow 5000 or 7500lbs with a GC.
In our over regulated country it is permissible with the correct trailer brakes.
And wee use smaller two wheel drive cars only 1.5-2ton for 7000lbs.

The V6 will do what you want for occasional towing. Seasonal holidays.
If you plan on a 5 month tour then maybe the V8. But not necessary.
Towing every day 2-3ton then V8 for sure.

Re: v6 towing question

What kind of terrain?

One other thing to keep in mind is that the V6 is more limited in the frontal area of what you are towing...from page 442 of the Owner's Manual the max frontal area is 40 sq ft for the V6 and 60 sq ft for the V8.

My V6 does fine with a 2000 lb pop-up camper but I'd be a bit concerned about towing a 4000+ lb trailer.

Have you ever towed 7500 lbs with a JGC? If not, then how do you claim its safe? I agree about the brakes but when your pulling 7500 lbs at 60+mph in the mountains Its more than just about brakes.

I agree i had a 1/2 ton PU 4x4 v8 towed 4800 lb Travel trailer with sway bars brake controller and if you had a make a panic stop you were in trouble yes its more than just the brakes its the transmission and the suspension . Size of engine is not main concern it helps but not most important . Tow Ratings are not clear on max loads do your own research on gross max weight for towing trailer ,people , gear.
