Personally, I think you are. I use 87 in mine and it runs great. If you check your owner's manual I believe 87 is what they actually recommend for the 3.6L engine.
Ok thanks I'm going to start using 87 again..I just got it about a month ago..when I first got it I was using 87 but was told 89 or better makes it run better so I've been using it since..
Northern Va gas prices are ridiculous and avg $3.65 for 89 in my area, so I use 87. Still costs $75 per fill up, twice a week. I fill up the Hemi and miles to empty say 310 miles.
I love the V8 though.
I get 372-435 miles (600-700km) a tank out of my Hemi depending on how much highway driving I do. I fill up at Costco @ 1.21/L. I use mainly regular 87 gas that may contain 10% ethanol. Vehicle is usually run at 80km/hr plus most of the time. 8 speed is great.
I've been told by numerous people to use the gas your vehicle calls for. My last car an Acura called for premium so that's what she got. My 2014 Hemi calls for regular. The computer will adjust itself for the fuel so there is no performance benefit. You just want quality clean fuel.
I guess the wording could be interpreted as such.... although the upper end of the range is usually "midgrade" which the OM is silent about.
5.7L Engine — If Equipped
This engine is designed to meet all emissions regulations and provide satisfactory fuel economy and performance when using high-quality unleaded gasoline having an octane range of 87 to 89. The manufacturer recommends the use of 89 octane for optimum performance. The use of premium gasoline is not recommended, as it
will not provide any benefit over regular gasoline inthese engines.
I use whatever the manufacturer considers recommended. For the Hemi that's 89. While the computers can adjust for 87, they are adjusting from optimum setting.
If I had the V6 I would use 87.
With today's gas mixtures, what GCLimited said is important, go to a high volume station. Gas that sits for long periods loses something.
I was curious when Chevy was running all the Volt commercials with the idiot who said she gassed up so little she couldn't remember where the filler was located. According to Chevy, the Volt stirs/mixes the gas periodically, and if you go too long without getting gas it will run on gas until you get to where you need to add some.
Since you got the V6, use the 87. I used to put premium in my V6 too and when I switched over to regular, I notice that I have better MPG but 1-3 on the EVIC without changing my driving habit.
I figure the engineers are smarter than I am so I go with their recommendations. My Hemi gets the mid grade (89) and up to 21 mpg on the highway. When I first bought it I used regular and then did a mileage test. Got better mileage and performance with the recommended 89. Just my $.02 worth.
Given that even the same grade, brand, and pump nozzle of gas can't give the same mileage consistently for a full year, it would be interesting to see the science behind this claim.
I have a '13 Limited with the 3.6L, but also with a K&N intake and hypertech interceptor, so because of this I run 89 octane. Runs great! Mostly around town (25-45 mph speed limits) with occasional highway use, and going through a tank of gas I'll average 19-20mpg
honestly, yes. on a stock tune id run the recommend or one grade better it helps it run smoother. one a aftermarket tune, id shoot for the best fuel possible that's also affordable. meaning if 87 is what you can afford, run that. if you want a tune and can only afford 87, get a better tune for 87.
E85 here since Day one .. Been Running Great and like the Cheaper Price at Fill Up .. Avg 18Mpg Mix city and High way if i do a lot of city Drops to about 15MpG but once i hit highway i see the EVIC Climb up to 18
