What mods will not void my warranty

So,

Ive heard horror stories about hpw a guy had a CAI and the warranty was voided on the engine when it went in for service.

What kind of mods can we do to avoid voiding the warranty on the WK2.

Ive never modded anything with a warranty and would like to change some things (exhaust/CAI) once my overland v8 comes in

Re: What mods will not void my warranty

to void your warranty, the dealer has to prove the AM part was the cause of the problem...IMO when you change the CAI/Exhaust out, they will have a very difficult time proving one of those caused major engine damage, unless of course there is faulty install (i.e. not tighten fileter on cai) or hydro-locking or faulty weld. I have changed intake/exhaust on 4 new-er vehicles and the warranty has never been an issue. GL

That's very true but you need to be aware that the onus is now on you to fight with Chrysler if they refuse a claim. The idea that they have to prove the modification caused the damage is wonderful on paper but in the real world, for major failures, you will end up in litigation to get it resolved. You just need to be willing to fight the fight if you mod the vehicle.

Re: What mods will not void my warranty

you are right about the litigation BUT its up to the dealer to prov that an aftermarket part caused the failure. i agrre, you will need to inititae the claim witha lawyer and such but they have the ONUS in court to prove it.

for some better understanding try this;

^^ thanks Rob! ONUS is on them to prove...but their pockets will run a lot deeper, so litigation is inveitable

Re: What mods will not void my warranty

It all depends on the dealer / Service manager. I think I have just as many mod's as the next guy and last summer my dealer replaced my Tcase actuator motor and one of the half shafts and seal on the front of my Jeep. All covered under warranty

If you were to purchase the Mopar CAI or cat back system, then I don't understand how those Mopar parts would void the warranty. I think it's up to the dealer and your relationship with them.

Re: What mods will not void my warranty

Yea I guess I'll have to go in and talk to the service manager before I do anything.

Are those Mopar parts comparable to other aftermarket parts...I would assume a Major manufacturer would have high quality but as far as performance goes, how do they stand up.

Re: What mods will not void my warranty

I don't understand why any dealer service dept would deny a warranty replacement of anything. They get paid to perform the procedure which brings work into the dealership. It's in their best interest to overlook your mods and perform the work.

They get paid to do the work. They get nothing if they deny you.

In the past we had a good relationship with a part dept manager. He would warranty replace our parts without bringing our cars into the dealership for us. (I don't like dealer techs touching my cars). So they were getting to bill Chrysler for warranty work (parts & labor hours) when all they did was swap a part for us. They confirmed the parts were bad along with vehicle VIN/mileage so no foul play here. Smart dealership business wise. And a happy customer that continued to drive an hour away for the service.

Re: What mods will not void my warranty

As touched upon above it is the manufacturers responsibility to prove the aftermarket part caused the failure. This came about with the Magnuson-Moss act in 1975. I use to have a heavily modified Wrangler that was under waranty. My dealer was always very good about it. I had a lifted suspension, bodylift, engine mouting bracket spacers, oversized tires, replacement bumpers, rock rails, hand throttle mounted on the stick and home brewed water resistant air filter box and never hand a single problem with a warranty claim. I did also carry a copy of the Magnuson-Moss Act in my glove box incase I had trouble while away from home but never needed it.
If a dealer ever tries to deny warranty based on a aftermarket part I would suggest that you use my cousin/attorney's advice. While holding a copy of the act and talking to the service manager politly say "My attorney advised me that you are required to prove that part caused the failure before denying my claim. Can you please ask your technician to come and explain to me why that is the case here?" Just be prepared to either accept bad news or proceed to involving an actal attorney if you still thing they are wrong.
