What Say You Exhaust Tuners?

In two weeks I'll be taking delivery of a 2011 JGC 5.7L, and am considering loaning it to Borla R&D so they can prototype an exhaust system for the new rigs. In turn I'll get a no or low cost new cat-back system or even headers all the way back to fresh air if so desired.

Borla says the factory warranty will stay valid with the cat backs installed, but the long pipe headers on back would likely void warranty and not pass emissions either in Cali or in my home state of Colorado.

Other than being without a freshly bought new rig for a couple of weeks, are there any other potential downsides? Should I go ahead and do this?

Thanks in advance.

Anyone do a short header, keep the factory CAT, then do catback to keep emmissions compliant?

Or is that just two steps forward, one step back with any gain from the headers constricted by the cat?

Thanks

Moose, I wouldn't do anything that would void your ability to have the vehicle pass the emissions tests. I think you would also be constantly trying to get a CEL disarmed. Unless you are doing all the other engine work that needs the totally unrestricted exhaust, why put yourself through this?

I'm afraid you're right JH. Can't help but look at that lowly exhaust manifold and want to unleash the hounds. Guess it would defeat the purpose if the cat has to stay in the middle of the system to pass emmissions.

Thanks Sleepy. Would be interested to learn more about porting the cat and intake. Unfortunately, CO emmissions are such that it is hard to circumvent and cats likely need to stay intact.

Borla chaffed at the notion of doing expensive and labor intensive mods at the front block and rear end, only to be interrupted by the cat restriction. It's not that it couldn't be done, just law of diminishing returns.

I just want my street and trail rig to also be a race car, or at least be able to quickly get out of the way of the SRT8 and Hemi Punisher.

If you register your jeep in summit county colorado it is in frisco they do not have emissions tests if that helps you

So basically Borla will only do an exhaust system that wont pass your states emissions? I personally wouldn't do it then. I live in MA and ended up getting rejected just because the guy at the inspection shop said my exhaust "sounded louder than stock". All I have is an SRT8 exhaust on my 05 JC without mufflers. I called my states vehicle inspection government hotline and the woman there basically read from a book where it did say its illegal to modify anything outside of OEM components. So I ended up driving to two other inspection stations, and the last guy threw an inspection sticker on because when he asked why I had a rejection sticker on I told him it was because of my brake lights and I had it fixed, so he didn't even focus in on the exhaust I guess.

Yetjeep, thanks for the heads up for Summit County. I may have taken the chance with the headers if I knew this beforehand. It was my choice to forego the headers as I was a bit more risk averse with a new vehicle warranty scenario and didn't want to deal with CO emissions exposure. Borla recommended the same.

Borla gets huge props, not only because they installed a catback system for no charge in exchange for loaning them my new rig for prototype, but because it outright rocks. At full tilt this thing rips both audibly and with the throttle. Even more impressive is the low growl at idle and mild gas pedal. You can both hear it and feel it resonating in your doodads. Yet at cruising speed no problem with bluetooth speakerphone or listening to tunes a mid volumes. It may be my favorite feature despite a vehicle full of great things.

Chris Higgins and David Borla personally focused on this to optimize a Borla kit specifically for the WK2 Hemi with MDS. I can't imagine how absolutely kick arse a full system from block to back would be.

Soundbyte thread below. I'll post a WOT clip here later this week.
