i'm still tempted to do stick to 5w20, as you said it wouldn't hurt to stick to 5w20.

Because i'm not liking my oil pan temp to run 105C in stop and go traffic. Do you face the same temp wise? Also the coolant temp needle rises a bit too.
My readings are all in Fahrenheit, so you'll have to convert. In this weather, (around 80F during the day), my engine oil runs pretty steadily around 195F to 203F. In the dead of Summer, (outside temp around 115F), the highest I ever had it go was to around 220F with the A/C running full bore in traffic.

The only time the engine coolant needle will spike, is if I leave it idle while I help my wife take the groceries in, (maybe 5 to 8 minutes). Then as soon as I start driving it goes right back down. I'm feeling that 5W-20 can handle this range of temperatures just fine. By the way, I'm using Pennzoil 5W-20 Full Synthetic.

I see that your manual recommends 91 Octane as "acceptable", and 95 Octane as "recommended" with the 5.7 HEMI. Mine say's 87 Octane is "acceptable", and 89 Mid Grade is "recommended".

I use only 91 Octane Premium. I'm guessing yours is different because of the higher temperature climate. American cars are sold in mostly temperate climates that experience much cooler temperatures. Phoenix, along with the desert Southwest is the exception to that rule.

5w30 was recommended on the 5.7L MDS systems a few years ago before qualified on 5w20. So 5w30 especially in a continued high heat environment will probably not make a whole lot of difference. But I agree with the above and would stay with the current recommended 5w20. If you are concerned about the oil holding up under continued extreme conditions and temperatures than go with synthetic 5w20. Synthetic has gotten cheap enough these days that its not really a thought to use it. I use Pennzoil ultra platinum synthetic 5w20 in my 2014 5.7L. The cost difference is a whole $15 dollars a year to use it vs Pennzoil's cheapest conventional. So like I said the cost difference has become immaterial on many synthetics these days. If you plan to keep the jeep for the long haul or operate in continued extreme conditions go with the synthetic but if you trade cars every 3 years or so and drive normal environment's just go with conventional.

I think some places overseas measure octane differently than we do or I think I remember reading that somewhere. so maybe same fuel and just different measuring system someone can correct me if im wrong on that.

Re: Whats your choice of oil for your WK2?

Correct its measured different same fuel though. I have been using valvoline full syn 0w-20 for 100000km and no issues with mds. Some here think i should use what the manaul says lol.

Here we go by RON "research octane #" (and the world too) rating and in the USA you guys have AKI "anti knock index" rating, so 89AKI is almost 94 RON. & 87 AKI is almost 91.3 RON. So no issues there.

87AKI-91RON
89AKI-94ishRON
91AKI-95RON I run this too.
93AKI-98RON We dont have

I work in a petrochemical plant, we make all different types to sell worldwide as required by each country.

the same as Kilometers and Miles, C & F, Kilos and Pounds...etc
Hope this helps...

Thanks!!

next first oil change I will stay on 5w20 but will do fully synthetic, the dealer here has Mopar conventional and semi synthetic only. New Jeep has conventional in it now.

I will try it and keep you all updated.

My stop and go and heavy traffic I hit 219F, and averaging 212F most of the time with mild cruising and never gone over 3 RPM.

You're in the same ballpark as me with those temperatures. I wouldn't worry. I'm not turning 2,000 RPM until I hit 80 MPH in 8th gear.

This image occurred during a red light for only couple of minutes, temp hit 226F & as before same average.
Driving was less than 1hr for the whole trip.

Really hope synthetic brings this down with same 5w20 viscosity, because I don't like the temp needle going up like this,, maybe just me thinking too much.

Enjoy life everyone!

Re: Whats your choice of oil for your WK2?

My '15 GC Summit V6 is exactly one year old and has had 3 oil changes. The GC has only 5100miles and I have used 5-20W conventional oil because my dealer and my personal mechanic have recommended it. It bothers me to use conventional rather than synthetic. Please give me your opinion and accept my thnks.
