When to change oil

Not sure when to get an oil change. The manual says 4000 miles if you drive heavy which I dont. I have about 4300 miles. havent done an oil change yet. The oil life % says 36. Its ok to wait till it goes to zero? Is there some sort of oil change light?

Manual says the sooner of:

oil life indicator/message
or
10,000 miles
or
12 months.

Any new car I've ever owned in the past are changed at 3k, regardless of how hard or easy i drive.

Re: When to change oil

Perpster has it correct...the maintenance schedule in the manual as described. While some folks prefer to change earlier and some dealers try to get folks to change it earlier for profit motive, it's not required. I follow the manual.

Re: When to change oil

Not having had a new car for over a decade before getting this new 2015 Overland, I was shocked that it did not call for 3,000 mile / 3 month oil changes, or at least an oil change during the break-in period.

Newer engines don't need special break in type oils any more.
Having said that, I still change the first time early and a bit more aggressively than the oil life meter indicates...and use nothing but dino farts instead of dino pee....but this is purely a personal preference I can't back up with any sort of real facts like oil analysis, etc.

... but my prior comment was along the lines of I expect this topic to become yet another one of the dozens if not hundreds of oil change threads that change nobody's mind.

For the OP, unless your dealer is a stinker, most now have express lanes that are extremely competitive with those quick change places... and the dealer is more likely to take care of the inevitable "oopsie" to maintain your good will.

Do what makes you feel comfortable--as long as you don't exceed the mileage, time, or oil reminder limits. Stick with the recommended viscosity and qualifications. There may be other oils just as good, but why risk it. 3K is a bit too soon, in my personal opinion, but I'm honest enough to note that it is purely a personal opinion--and I come from the era of fill up the gas and change the oil engines where 3K miles was pushing it.

Some dealers offer change packs of either standard or full synth in their express service. You may have also gotten one or more free oil changes as part of your buy--worth checking.

Re: When to change oil

You can't go wrong with perpster's recommendation. With the V8 just make sure you use the recommended viscosity as it can affect proper operation of the MDS feature.

Re: When to change oil

As mentioned previously in this thread, just what oil change intervals should be used is an ongoing topic and there can definitely be no case against changing earlier apart from the cost and inconvenience. Your engine won't be harmed doing this if you use the specified grade.
(and here in Australia most dealers don't use Chrysler spec oils - mostly they use a "one size fits all" oil).

On this forum there are a number of posts by owners using spec oil that have had an oil sample tested by a reputable lab - such as Blackstones - and these tests have shown plenty of oil life left after change at the specified interval.
To me thats an argument that saves a bit of money but still provides protection to my 2015 CRD and the 2012 CRD that preceded it.

Re: When to change oil

I would change the original oil early, because I like to get any possible contaminents out, also mamopar puts a very small filter on the Hemis since they need to fit in the trucks with the electric pump power steering, so change early and put a larger filter on.

What you do after is up to you. I change oil more frequent than the monitor which seems in my case to allow 10k miles.

Of course I grab oil on clearance, just cleaned out a few Autozone stores got about 150 qts at 2$ per qt of Pennzoil ultra platinum 0w-40 srt, 5w-30, 5w-20 ; mobile 1 AFE 0w-30, Castrol Edge EP 5w-20, 5w-30,10w-30, QS UD 5w-30.

All my fleet will be happy with low cost synthetics LOL
