Would you delete: muffler or resonator?

Just purchased the wife a 2011 WK2 w/ the 5.7. Has some kind of CAI and RRO lift already on it. [cliff notes are at the bottom!]

I'm looking to add a little v8 sound without it being obnoxious AND refuse to pay $$$ for the catback kits. I've read several posts, watched lots of youtube videos, and am still lost of what will add a little sound without adding much drone. I know sound is interpreted different by everyone, but I'm looking for opinions from those with the experience!!

I'm used to loud cars/trucks (have a open header camaro and straight piped cummins), but she won't put up with any "racket" in hers. Just trying to get it right the first time, so I don't get yelled at!!

On a side note: She already hates the duratrax tires on it. They are VERY loud tho, the start to buzz at 20mph. I dare to say my 37" mud grapplers are quieter. She already told me the tires will have to go. I'm thinking I can cover the hummmm up w/ a little v8 sound and leave the tires!?!?

Thanks for the help!!

The short version... what to change on the exhaust for:
- cheap price
- little more v8 sound
- VERY little drone
1. Remove muffler, 2. remove resonator, 3. remove muffler, add another (which one?) keep resonator?

Thanks!
Zac

Check out the Gibson Axle back. Reasonable Price and nice. I have it on my 3.6 not too loud just enough to bring the engine to life it just replaces the stock muffler right after the axle and they are just welded on.. It cost me 30 for my install so I can't see yours being more than 100

Re: Would you delete: muffler or resonator?

Personally, keeping budget in mind I would start with the suitcase muffler in the middle. I'd replace it with the Magnaflow 11385. It's a muffler that has a resonated X-Pipe path inside. This should increase the exhaust flow and maintain exhaust flow balance. Then if you want more you can upgrade the mufflers by the rear bumper.

Re: Would you delete: muffler or resonator?

DON"T mess with the mufflers if it is gonna be the wife's car.

These cars are really quiet and even though they lots of sound deadening it may not be enough if you don't get the desired result. Sound is subject.

One other word of advice listen to some exhaust mods on youtube with Earbuds in your ear and at a decent volume so you can hear what it really sound like the sound is accurate.

I would offer this if you insist on messing with the exhaust.

Ditch the suitcase muffler and get two magnaflow cansiter mufflers just like in the kit. put and X pipe behind that and keep the stock rear resontors.

That way you get that burble at idle and a little rasp when you stomp the GO pedal.

Re: Would you delete: muffler or resonator?

Chicago_Style... I'll check out the gibson. I've heard of them a long time ago, didn't know they were still around.

jeelo... come to think of it, I loved a manaflow I put on my Lightning. It was VERY tame sounding. Had just the right amount of v8 sound until you jumped on the skinny pedal. Then it was a screaming contest between the kenny bell and the stainless headers thru the dual in/out magnaflow. I miss that truck

Jeep_addicted... The wife told me today (1st day of really driving it) that the tires were too loud and put a moderate sounding exhaust on to drown out the tire hummm. I've listened to lots of the sounds on youtube... my favorite by far is the corsa, but no way I'm spending that. It's also prob a tad to agressive for her taste. I personally don't like the raw v8 hemi sound of either muffler or resonator delete, so I think a nice free flowing, but mellow magnaflow muffler and a H-pipe will be the ticket. What can I say I'm a old shool H-pipe fan, plus the X's are rumored for peak hp not low end (where as the H-pipe is more low end friendly).

Thanks for your opinions!

Anyone else have a suggestion before I add some exhaust pieces to my cart?!?!?

Re: Would you delete: muffler or resonator?

Many months ago, I replaced the suitcase muffler with 2 Flowmaster DBX mufflers and an X-pipe. The shop did a very poor job(ugly, hanging low)but the sound was very good: No drone. Last week, I had a shop clean up the mess and also install a Borla 11826 SRT axel back(which delete's the resonators) and now there is lots of drone. Tomorrow, I will install CC inserts in the tail pipes in hopes of eliminating the drone.

Going back again, many months ago, just before installing the DBXs, the shop put straight pipes in place of the suitcase muffler but no X-pipe. There was a terrible raspy noise(overloaded resonators) under moderate to heavy acceleration. Installing an X or H-pipe might have eliminated the raspy noise....there was no drone and it sounded pretty good cruising and light acceleration. If I'm not mistaken, I think I remember reading a post where someone did that exact thing: Straight pipes, X-pipe, and keep stock resonators...he thought it sounded good.

An X-pipe is a little too wide to fit in the narrow tunnel leading to the rear of the vehicle so the H-pipe would be ideal. Good luck. Hope this helps.

Evolv0 is just really nice
Re: Would you delete: muffler or resonator?

I suggest keeping the rear resonators in place and replace the middle suitcase muffler with a magnaflow 11385 or 12568.

Re: Would you delete: muffler or resonator?

Ok. I have the gibson on my '14 hemi

It does drone a bit. But it is so mellow

My dad and brother both didnt notice i changed the exhaust. If she drives with no music on etc. she ll notice it. I say its a little mellow tone. The stock exhaust is dead silent almost.

Definitely quieter than borla and corsa

But the funny thing is. If you have the 14. With this new trans. The exhaust produces the low hemi rumble only at 1800-2500 rpm. Anywhere else. You are not gonna hear it.

Re: Would you delete: muffler or resonator?

+2 for the Gibson.

I constantly thank myself for not spending 5x as much on a 5.7 system>dual mod that would have me in the dog house at home and hating the drone after time. The Gibson is just right and cold start-ups sound mean every time.
