help a brother out! i hate to bother but need your collected help! I just bought a 2011 5.7 anniversary edition WK2 and want to hear the hemi but not lose any power/torque. I have read a LOT of stuff so far and need help deciphering dropping the suitcase muffler for a X-pipe or performing a reso delete?Their are TONS written but has anyone done both? Which has the best sound but doesnt lose power/torque?
I had a few WK1 Jeep SRT8's and learned quickly that after a ton of time and playing the stock exhaust performed extremely well. The only thing that was CLOSE but louder was an X pipe where stock muff was and super 44's at the back where the Reso's were BUT it was aggressive.... I would LOVE to have someone's experience keep me from wasting a lot of time on the WK2.
TEACH ME! Will be getting a CAI and Diablo tune in a few months.
Pm ed you but I was going to add that both Summit and Jets makes x pipe kits that are very easy to work with on just about anything including our WK2's!
Thx everyone. I had bought the Lawson industries x pipe and used on my SRT8 wk1 paired with flow super 44's and they were awesome. I am going to try using the stock reso's with the x pipe then add flowmaster super 50 or dynomax super turbo if the stock reso's aren't deep enough..
UPDATE - Had the Xpipe installed, muff removed and left the stock reso's. The sound is more of a higher pitched sound but much better than stock. At WOT its very tinny. A great temporary mod for me but ordered a set of the Super 50 series and will have installed where the resos are and advise. Their was a little increase in performance. The Xpipe is definitely a great addition and sounds nice as long as you dont like to go at full throttle but i personally like a deeper sound.
returned yesterday from having the Reso's replaced with the Dynomax Super Turbo 17733's ($40 each) and 4" Pro Elite stainless steel resonator tips ($20 each). They look and sound amazing. Remember this is removing the stock muff and reso's and replacing with the X-pipe and above muffs and tips. Total spent with replacing all with 2.5" pipe was $300. with update with pictures later today. Here is a good video representing the sound. Sounds awesome outside and has an excellent inside rumble and most importantly NO interior drone.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGslaIz-3i8
I know this is an old thread but I removed my POS suitcase muff and plopped in an X pipe and here are my findings.
From the factory there is no crossover meaning no scavenging which means held back power and efficiency. The factory muffler is a giagantic, uneven heavy POS. It needed to go.
The sound is great. I have not gone WFO yet but I let it hit 4k and it's nice. It sounds more like a Challenger though. I gained a solid 1mpg and the engine seems a bit smoother. I've been driving home the same way for since I've owned this WK2 and I always put the jeep in cruise down this police ridden 40mph road. It is uphill slightly. It always drops into a lower gear to 2k. Since the X Pipe it does not drop down but stays around 1200 which means it picked up torque. I am extremely happy for the $160 I have invested.
thanks any part numbers that you can help me out with? did you do it yourself? Did you keep stock reso's how did you bolt up to spring bolts from cats?
Lots of questions but want this done soon. Does the X-pipe sit underneath drive train that went in the U of the suitcase or of to the side?
Cut the suitcase muff entry pipes behind the OEM spring clamps so the back exhaust can still be unbolted and dropped. The X Pipe sits where the very backside of the OEM suitcase muff was below the drive shaft. Yes I kept the stock resonators. I learned my lesson with the 300c. DO NOT remove the OEM resonators unless you plan on adding in other resonators AND mufflers. It will be too loud, droney and just plain nasty. The entire point is to get some growl from the V8 and increase efficiency. NOT ruin the luxury and cruise-ability of the Jeep. Please trust me when I say leave the rear resonators on.
Thanks, more questions though. When you say cut behind the springs do you mean cut between the spring bolts and muff keeping spring bolts or between cat and bolts therefore deleting them. Can you see the x-pipe or is it up high and tight enough to underbody that it looks stock?
And I will be keeping resonators. this will be going on a 3.6.
Look at the two pictures I posted, print them for reference. Cut on the OEM suitcase muff side. The X Pipe is in the same exact pipe path as the muffler was but it's not as deep so it tucks further up against the undercarriage resulting in more clearance.
Cool video thanks for the update. Sounds super loud or is it just me? How does it sound going 60-80mph? Drone or any tingy metal sounds when reving in the high rpm's
It has a loud throaty cold start. Other than that it's not loud until about 4K. There is zero drone and at 60 you can't hear it. 70 if you're paying attention and the radio is off you notice it.
I had to go WFO today due to a common US 19 asshole and about 4500 it had a ton of rasp which I didn't much care for. This doesn't bother me since it's not a race jeep and will hardly ever see high RPMs.
It doesn't sound very deep, or it could just be the video quality vs real life. What do you think about replacing the resos with glass packs? And how much did that cost you?
around $160 or something like that. It's nice and deep at idle. The problem is now I'm asking the resonator to deal with the additional sounds the suitcase muff previously took care of and it's too much at high RPMs. I would not replace the resonators with glass packs. If I had the urge to hear more and back off the rasp I'd use either maganaflow or Corsa mufflers
If the stock suitcase doesn't produce a crossover function then leaving the stock resos and installing an X-pipe in place of the suitcase should have some preformance advantage.
Anybody done any dyno testing besides seat of the pants?

I can't recall finding any treads on dyno gains but every thread I did find all concluded a custom tune is the only thing that actually made a difference
That's good to know. I'm still trying to figure out the differences in 5.7 Hemi vs. SRT exhaust. Parts guy at the dealership confirmed that the cats, front muffler, and rear resonators all have different part numbers between the two models but he didn't have any specs on physical differences. He did confirm that if the same part is used interchangeably on different models that they will have the same part number.
Thanks. So does anyone want to share with me the tubing diameters of their SRT exhaust?
Bigger diameters means better flow. If I can get better sound and better flow with a factory tuned SRT exhaust system that still maintains decent back pressure then I really need to find one that someone who wants to unload.
Someone here with an SRT that went aftermarket surely has one laying around that they would like to get some money out of. No?
Thanks Scott. I got under the Summit today and the 2014 5.7 exhaust comes with 2.5" OD inlet cat piping to the suitcase and 2.25" OD outlet piping from the suitcase to the resonators.
Thanks to all that contributed to this thread.....
Did the suitcase cutout and Xpipe install today. Nice sound on acceleration....no drone.
I didn't include any pics/sound as the previous comments sum up what was done.
Took my 2016 WK R/T to local exhaust shop...took 1 hr and $150. Extra piping was needed.
