2011 Overland - Loud POP in the back, jeep looks like a low-rider now.

Hello,

Wife and I heard a loud pop while driving. Thought a tire burst. Checked tires and air pressure and no problems. Several hours later, we returned and the jeep was sitting so low.. even below 'parked entry' mode.

Needless to say the suspension makes odd sounds now as if its trying to inflate but nothing is happening at this point.

I pulled the air suspension fuse just to get it to stop making noises.
I'm guessing something burst causing a leak of the closed system..?? Which is why the jeep won't rise to normal levels.

Is this a hose or something?

Oh, and we've been driving it around at city street speeds, but every single bump in the road feels like 'we're on a donkey' (as my wife put it -- which is odd cause we've never been on a donkey) lol..

Any thoughts/suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like an air blader burst in the back. The air suspension can be expensive to fix and fill back with nitrogen. Hopefully compressor is ok thats near 2k on its own. Hope you have maxcare that should cover it for you.

I just got my 2015 summit with maxcare. Glad I did.

For all of those currently, or future visitors to this site looking to buy a grand cherokee with air suspension. GET MAXCARE WARRANTY. You can be enjoying your day driving around with your wife and POP! There goes $3,000 + to fix the car. Sure, you can drive around with it broken but that will eventually makes things worse. If OP has maxcare warranty, this problem will be more expensive than the warranty price itself.

Hope you have warranty OP.

OP, You really do NOT want to be driving that vehicle with the issue as described. It's likely you have a punctured air bag in the back. Not only could you incur further damage by driving it, you could have a safety issue, too. Please get it to a dealer service department for repair.

I don't have maxcare... But I'll be bringing it in for repair over the next few days. Once repaired, I'm going to look for a new vehicle and trade this one in. Gonna stick to leases after this. Won't have to deal with out of warranty issues ever again.

Hi RenegadeNY,

Sorry to hear about the concerns you are having with your vehicle! I'd be happy to follow up with the dealership during the repair process for you. Just send a PM to our page with your VIN and contact information if that's the case!

Re: 2011 Overland - Loud POP in the back, jeep looks like a low-rider now.

Hi Andrea,

Thanks for reaching out. I am extremely saddened by this whole experience and problem. My vehicle has never had any major issues and has only 30k in nearly 5 years. Its used for driving the kids to and from school and errands here and there. Thats 6k a year in driving.

Jeep service quoted me 6900 for the repair of, allegedly 2 faulty/broken front air struts (which is the bulk of the cost) - as well as 1200 for a blend door actuator to fix an AC issue - and another unknown amount to fix a bad door lock.

I'm totally distraught at this insane quoted amount! Had I known Quadra Lift would be as problematic as I've read everywhere and now experienced myself, I would have never purchased this vehicle.

For a vehicle that is not driven off-road, there is no reason the suspension should fail - let alone so early. I wanted Jeep for their reliability and now I'm stuck with no vehicle and I am unsure how to proceed. I should not have the burden of shelling out this amount of money especially since I've never had any major service done on this vehicle. I've owned many cars before and I known things fail and sometimes service is required, but wow... Wow.

I sincerely believe Jeep should offer a one time good-faith customer satisfaction repair. It would be the right thing to do. I've never used their service while under warranty. This has left me with a bad feeling about the brand and its reliability.

I've spoken to Chrysler and opened a case number. Someone was going to contact the service department manager and get back to me. I don't know how that process works or whats involved, but I'm waiting to hear back - hopefully by tomorrow.

I'm really hoping Jeep can take care of this for my family and me.

I'm actively involved in several rather large forums as well as facebook groups in the NY area. Well over 30k members in total. There is constant talk about vehicle recommendations and I've always recommended JGC. I'd like to be able to praise their customer service - after the sale and warranty as this is what builds loyalty.

best,
R

It could be as simple as the air line popping out of the air bag. Never know. Or the bag itself could have popped. Rubber only stays pliable for so long and eventually fails.

Struts are $1100/ea and are held in by 4 bolts plus an air line. You could easily replace them yourself or find a competent mechanic. Then re-pressurize the tank with nitrogen at the dealer.

I agree with reaching out to the dealer and FCA and see if they will make good on this low mileage, otherwise trouble-free car.

As these age though, there are aftermarket parts becoming available at lower prices: Grand Cherokee Air Suspension Parts & Conversion Kits now. A competent independent mechanic and aftermarket parts can save thousands.
