2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Tire Balancing Issues

I bought a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overloand V6 Loaded with everything that I could option onto it. I have 20"s and the Good year Forta Tires.

At about 65-75 MPH I get a pretty bad wheel shimmer. I noticed it at about 125 miles, so I called the dealer and told them that I would be on vacation for some time and I would call when I got back. So I setup an appointment for today and took the jeep for service.

I received a call about 2 hours later that everything was ok... I asked if they had fixed it? They only mentioned that they drove a new 2012 on the lot and it did something similar so they proceeded to tell me that it was ready to pickup.

Upon further inspection I found out that it seams all they did was rotate the tires from the front to back and the back to the front. I found that hard to believe that this was there fix for the problem.

I have emailed my really good salesman and I have asked him how he thinks that I should proceed. He emailed me back and was nice enough to send the information onto the service manager.

So my question is, does anyone else seam to be having this same issue? If you have been able to fix can you let me know what you did to resolve the issue? I am concerned about the tires cupping and the fact that I bought a 46K sticker SUV and it shakes at 65MPH...

I am interested in your thoughts....

Thanks

Re: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Tire Balancing Issues

I had the same issue, 3 of the 4 were out of balance. That didn't clear it completely and I suspected an out of round tire but I replaced them with Michelins and there's no vibration at any speed.

I'm 99.999% confident vibration issues at that speed are tire related so if they can't fix it with a balance push for a force balance or have a real tire store diagnose the bad tire.

Re: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Tire Balancing Issues

Mine did this also, so I replaced the tires with the Michelin Latitude HP and it was better but still had a little shimmy at times between 66 and 72 mph. I had both these tires road forced twice. I Just put 18" inch wheels on it with AT tires and so far I have not felt it.

Thanks for the reply on this, I am supposed to call my dealer to have them setup a second appointment to see what chrysler is going to do about the problem.

Unhappy Rotational Force Variation

It's called rotational force variation. GM had a tsb on it a number of years ago that my mechanic passed on to me.

I won't try to explain it (gooogle it) but it can be minimized by matching high spots to low spots.

Very critically, it has a numeric value. If it exceeds that value the only fix is to replace the tire and/or wheel. That is why car and tire manufacturers don't crow about it. It goes STRAIGHT to the heart of their quality control. That is also why Michelins are so expensive but have such a good reputation. A NEW tire can be badly out of whack!

HUNTER makes wheel balancing machines that can minimize it by computer control. The GM bulletin specified it for their dealerships. When I ask about it and they don't have that machine, I always get the shifty eyed BS, "Oh well, a good tire man (u mean the pimply faced kid back there?) can tell about that!" Like I said, BS. It has a numeric value. Watch while ur wheel/tire combination is being balanced and see what that value is. Lower is better. Too high and u definitely get magic finger vibes!

Re: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Tire Balancing Issues

Dropped off the Jeep this morning at 10AM and now at 5:15 PM they stated that they had balanced the tires and or rotated them again, same situation. So they have sent an email to chrysler to see what to do next.

My sales guy has been really good to me, he is even letting me drive his demo while the repair is happening, totally not his fault but he is helping the best the he knows how. Pretty good dealership, Great sales guy!

If anyone has any similar events please feel free to leave your stories/solutions, I really don't want to go down to a 18" tire, I like the look of the 20's.
