2014 WK2 - Run Flat Tires/No Full Sized Spare

Somewhere buried in the discussion regarding the 2014 WK2, I thought I saw a reference to no spare tire, just a run flat with a can of tire sealant.

Hopefully, this is NOT true!! That would render the Trail Ready rating totally ridiculous!

Any clarification out there?

Thx.

But good for those of us that will never take our Jeep off the pavement. Don't have to lug around a 5th wheel :-)

Run flat tires are generally heavy and perform poorly, however. Lugging a fifth wheel would actually make for a lighter car....

Laredo, Laredo X, Altitude, Limited, Overland, Overland Summit (17s, 18s, 20s) do NOT have run flats. They all have a spare. If the vehicle has the tow package from the factory then the spare is full size I believe.
He is talking about the 2014's. So are you telling us your information is in regards to the 2014?

Re: 2014 WK2 - Run Flat Tires/No Full Sized Spare

Our new 2013, thankfully, has a full size spare for the optional 20" wheels. One month old, no off road, 1500 miles and the wife comes home with a sheet metal screw in the inside right rear tire sidewall. The tire went down in the garage, about 20 miles out of town. Without the spare, it would have been tow time. Tire is not repairable. Dealer will replace tomorrow, for $150.00, mounted and balanced. I really hope they don't cheap out on the 2014's and not include a spare. This is a life saver, especially in winter, out here in the plains.

Re: 2014 WK2 - Run Flat Tires/No Full Sized Spare

I'm not a fan of runflats... on my car. On my wife's vehicle, I'd give them thought. Mostly because I know there's no way in hell she'd be able to get the spare tire on if some jackwagon at a dealership or tire place has put on the wheels with an impact wrench at 8 million ft lbs.

So a runflat would be the difference between her getting home, and her having to get roadside assistance. Ideally, I'd like it to stil have a full size spare though.

RFTs suck. I had them on my 2010 E92 BMW. Not only did they ride bad but the Continentals were so LOUD....like I had Super Swampers. Lol

Re: 2014 WK2 - Run Flat Tires/No Full Sized Spare

Not all tire problems can be fixed with fix-a-flat. If you in BFE with a slit sidewall or a blow out, you are screwed without an actual spare. If Jeep is going to go this route, they should, at the very least, include a FS spare as an option at their cost, i.e., no mark-up.

I helped a gal this weekend who had a catastrophic tire failure and fix-a-flat would have done her no good at all. She had a spare and we got her underway.

Re: 2014 WK2 - Run Flat Tires/No Full Sized Spare

From my understanding newer generation runflat tires are much better. I agree that yes they used to be harsh and very noisy, but thats not really the case anymore. For example I used a set of 2012 SRT8 wheels/tires on my 2012 Overland and they were just as quiet if not MORE quiet than the non-run flat tires on my original 20" wheels.
And as mentioned above you can have a huge puncture anywhere in the tire and you would still be able to drive. This is even more critical if the vehicles is your wifes!
Hummmm lets see, get stuck on the side of the road during a down pour on a 4 lane highway and have to change out a tire, or just drive home like you would any other time? Yeah I think i'll take the run flats ;-)

Also, I know you guys keep mentioning fix-a-flat, however I dont understand why a car with run flats would come with fix-a-flat? They are run flats, you dont need fix-a-flat lol. Yes that would be real sucky if the car only came with fixaflat and no spare tire, but the whole purpose of a run flat is that even with zero pressure the tire can still be driven on.

Run flats seem to not be very durable. Friend has had BMW sedan for 1 year and has had 6 "flats" resulting in 6 new tires.

Wife's ZR4 had 4 in last 18 months - for some reason they are never fixable - that was about $1500 discounted for the 4 of them - never again would I get run flats even for her..... BTW BMW's TPMS is not very reliable or self evident (at least to her )
