So I'm right at 20k on my '14 WK2 Limited 4WD and the Michelin Latitude Tours that came on it are about done. Passenger rear is on the indicators and the rest are at about 3/32 left. Not real happy with the treadlife on this particular set of tires. If you buy the tires new from a retailer, they carry a 65k mile treadwear warranty, Not sure about the OEM set though. Having Discount check them out tomorrow and call Michelin to see if they can give me any sort of concession or maybe replace them under warranty. Ran at 33psi and rotated ev ery 6k-8k miles, as recommended.
Anyone else have issues with these tires, or did I jsut have a run of bad luck?
For replacements I'm considering a set of Falkens. I know, I know....pretty cheap price on them. But reviews for them seem to be pretty damn good and the one set I've had in the past were pretty decent. Not sure if I want to go with street tread liek the Ziex 612 or if i want to go to an A/T like the Rocky Mountain or even the Wild Peaks if they make them in that size.
20K miles sounds abnormally low for tread life. Have you been running them at proper inflation and rotating them routinely? Something is amiss and it would be good for you to determine the "why" before you invest money in new tires, no matter what you choose.
I have over 28K miles on my Forteras (20" wheels) and they are only down about half of their tread wear life. I run them at 38 PSI, rotate with oil changes every 8K miles and am not an aggressive driver. Most of my mileage is highway.
That said, many folks move to different tires than the OEM selection. I will do that when I replace mine... 'have my eye on something else.
Yes -- the Latitudes are horrible. Mine were at 5/32nds at ~23K. I replaced them at that time, because they were already worthless in the snow during the previous winter, and I had a cut in one of the sidewalls. I also rotated mine, and kept them at 33 psi -- which is what the door card says. They were all worn evenly. I honestly wouldn't have taken another set of Latitudes if they were $100 for all 4. I bought a set of Cooper A/T3s, and have been smiling ever since. It appears I did take a 1 MPG hit (it's hard to tell during winter), but I'd rather have the traction.
I too have been disappointed with the mileage I got out of the 18" michelins latitudes.
They clearly don't live up to what is printed on the sidewalls I was expecting to get somthing close to 2 and a half years out of mine.
I was shocked that I had to replace them with less than 10K on the clock I was expecting to get 20K from them with my driving conditions.
Now I would say follow this formula:
Check the tread depth of the next tire you are looking at.
Check the speed rating
Check the Temperature rating.
If you don't do any serious off roading and you don't see any serious snow.
Here are my top three recommendations for tires under $190 each.
Nitto Nt421Q, you can find these at discount tire direct.com with free shipping. ( have these on 20" on my other jeep) These tires were recently released last year and the designers had the JGC and Durango in mind so they should last longer and be quiet.
Toyo Open country H/T can be found at treaddepot.com with free shipping.(This tire seems to have very good treadlife with many reviewer claiming 50k or higher on a set.
General Grabber HT/s can also be found at both discounttiredirect and treaddepot.com (Another High mileage tire designed for heavier pick up truck that should cope with the weight of the Grand cherokee.
I have some Pirelli Scorpions ATR install that at first I thought I hated but now that they are broken in they are not so bad. But they cost way more.
Glad to see it's not just me then. I honestly don't know what tire I want to go with. On one hand, it's my daily driver, so a street tire would be ideal. But at the same time, I did buy the 4x4, so a decent A/T would be good, too. Not to mention, A/T's usually have more tread, in this case 12.5-13/32 vs. probably 9 on the OEM tires. I'm considering the RRO 2.5" lift, too, and then throwing on some SRT reps with whatever A/T tire I can find, too. Just not sure what I want to do. My WK2 will never see any serious off-roading. That's what my JK is for. Most days it just sits in the driveway lately, though. Need to remedy that now that the nice weather is returning here in NTX.
Just not sure what direction I want to go with my GC. It's an SUV, but to me it just feels like it sits too low for some reason. My previous Xterras ('08 & '10) sat higher in stock form. Of course both got lifted with Calmini leveling kits and 33" Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ's. So lots to consider.
While you are at Discount, check out the Michelin MS/2.
Arguably one of the best all around SUV tires ever made.
If you do serious off road, you'd want something with a bit better pattern--where I'd avoid the Michelin AT/2 as it tends to not wear anywhere near as well as the MS/2 and it is as noisy [to me] as many more aggressive treads.
For mild offroad, moderate snow, excellent wet road traction, and low noise and long wear it is hard to beat the MS/2.

I am nearing 22k on my 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee . All highway and in town driving. Lots of wear left on tires. I have used michelins for 30+ years and have never had one problem.. Not even a flat. In Southern California though. I will replace with some type of Michelin though when the time comes.
33psi is too low. Door Tag says 36psi. I run 39psi.
Keep in mind there are two different versions of this tire.
Low Rolling Resistance version (Green X) and not. The Low Rolling Resistant version (which started on the 2014's) has much lower tread life (about 1/3 less is if recall). Basically two completely different tires with the exact same name except for the "Green X".
I just sold a set of the non Low Rolling Resistance ones to a 2011 GC Owner and he had like 45K on his and was buying mine to replace them. The set I sold came off a 2013 Durango which were non Low Rolling Resistance.
Yea, the "low rolling resistance" tires that were standard on the Prius we owned had very short tread life...replaced them with "normal" tires to avoid that with little impact on economy, frankly.
If the stock tires get you 36k, you should be lucky. These aren't the same tire you would buy from a tire store. Lowest price company gets the tire bid, computers are the same way with hard drives. Those OEM tires suck and that's why I got rid of them at 100miles for the ms/a 2 tires, they have been great. I would also agree that running at 33 psi is way to low for that tire even if the door says so. Look at the tire for psi and go from there. You probably lost has mileage as well running that low
et2011, there is another thread here about the NT421Q...please post your thoughts in it once you have yours installed, etc. I really like that tire and do plan on putting them on when the time comes, as I indicated previously. They are perfect for my needs.
I too was dissapointed in the tread life of my OEM Lattitudes. I opened a warranty claim with Michelin (done through a phone call), had a local tire dealer do an inspection, and they gave me about $75 off each ($300 total) on 4 new LTX MS2's which I am more happy with. Good luck!
Michelin will tell you to choose an "authorized dealer" (there are many, but must be brick and mortar store) to do an inspection of the tires. I chose Mavis because they had the lowest starting price for the MS2's. It took a few trips/calls to Mavis to get them to communicate with Michelin, but was not too heavy a lift for the savings I got. There was also a $75 rebate at the time which the discount tire place thought might not go through because it was a warranty claim purchase, but it did.
Also, my old Lattitudes tires were at around 4-5-6/32nds when I pulled the trigger on new ones.
