2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Transmission Issues

This post is quite long but please stick with it. It is not my intent to offend any current or past Jeep owners, only to express my dissatisfaction with my new 2015 JGC. I noticed a persistent downshifting problem within the first 3000 miles of ownership. I called for an appointment for an oil change and a transmission flash. All service was completed. At 4000 miles the downshifting problem returned. Downshifting from 4th gear to 3rd gear was very pronounced. Back to the dealership for another re-flash. The problem seemed to be corrected. The issue slowly returned around 5000 miles for downshifting from 4th to 3rd was very noticeable. Another visit to the dealership for another transmission flash. I was informed this latest flash was the latest and greatest. I drove the vehicle for less than 50 miles and the downshifting problem was back. Another transmission re-flash was performed. After this latest re-flash, I insisted the service manager take the vehicle for a test drive. Service informed me that the downshifting was a concern and a new transmission valve body was needed in order to make the repair. I was offered a loaner car, for the Jeep was in the shop for almost 2 weeks. I was called to pick up the Jeep for the valve body was replaced and the vehicle is repaired. I picked up the Jeep after work and parked it in my garage. The following morning I noticed a pie plate size leak of transmission fluid on the garage floor. I returned to the dealership at lunch time. Service informed me that the leak was do to excess transmission fluid not being wiped from the underbody and all is good. With this I feel confident the Jeep is fixed. I attempted to drive the Jeep back to work, but not 500 feet from the dealership I thought the transmission was going to fall off the vehicle. Now shifting from 2nd gear to 1st a horrible clunking noise is not only heard, but you can actually feel the loud clunking. I drove back to the dealership, for I was less than 500 feet away. I asked the service manager to take a quick test drive. Before we were able to drive off the lot, he was able to hear the loud clunking noise and feel it as well. So again I need to leave the Jeep in for service. Another loaner car was offered and for almost another 2 weeks I waited for a new transmission. I picked up the Jeep and I am now driving it. I have noticed even now with the new transmission the nagging downshifting from 4th gear to 3rd gear still persists. I can actually close my eyes and tell you what gear the vehicle downshifted from. I feel this vehicle is a Lemon and I have made numerous complaints to FCA. I was issued a case manager and I am supposed to hear back from him by this coming Thursday. In the mean time I have become the laughing stock at my employment. I hear all the time, what vehicle are you going to be driving to work this week? I also hear comments all the time that they are so happy they drive Chevy's. All I can say is that I will never be tempted to purchase another Jeep or for that matter any Chrysler product.

Re: 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Transmission Issues

I was trying to read the wall O' text, but I see the dealer has performed a lot of re-flashes and replaced a valve body, has a transmission "quick learn" be performed yet?

I have no idea if the dealer has done that. I have never heard of it. I thought the transmission learned from the driving habits of the driver.

The 2015 is an 8 speed not the 5 speed which is what started the thread. I posted on that thread 3 times for the 3 transmissions I went through on my 2012 GC. Two rebuilds and the 3rd being a replacement. Based on my personal experience the Mercedes Benz NAG1 (WA580 or W5A580) automatic transmission used in the 2011-13 model is a POS. I am sure there are folks that have a 100K miles of no problems with it too.

In 2014 Chrysler switched to the ZF Friedrichshafen 845RE. ZF and Chrysler Group reached a supply and license agreement for ZF's 8HP 8-speed automatic transmission so Chrysler can make it themselves in SC. All BMW, most Audis, and some VW models use this transmission in addition to Fiat-Chrylser.

There are always the duds with manufacturing. I think the main issue after the dealer "fixed" it is that they did not know how to do a rebuild correctly as evidenced in the immediate failure after the repair. I would find a another dealer or at least one that uses a competent transmission shop to do their rebuilds.

Re: 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee Transmission Issues

My concern now is the new transmission that was installed acts a lot like the original one. It displays the same downshift roughness from 4th into 3rd gear. Both transmissions were smooth as silk while upshifting. I am hesitant to bring it in for service for I am waiting to hear from FCA regarding it's "Buy Back Program"

Dump it get a v8 though you should not have to

There are multi-page threads covering the 5.7. 6.4, and 3.0 also.

It started with the 2011 in 2011. It has evolved into transmission woes covering all the way to 2015 in the 8 speed. Same harsh shift problems. Same flashes that work for a few miles then crop back up.
