2016 Suspension changes (effects certain lifts & lowering)

So, I dont have the expertise here...but Ive been told by Bilstein that Jeep made 'significant changes' in the suspension for 2016 and the current shocks they have for the wk2, will not work on 16+.

I cant assume the actual shock tower itself has been modified, so I believe the spacers kits on the market will still work. But...OME, Eibach, Icon, KING, Bilstein current offerings wont work.

***Confirmed. 2016s have changed both the shocks and the control arms. However the spacer kits available DO STILL FIT.

If I'm not mistaken, there are a bunch of new parts on MY16 underneath for lightening the load. (some aluminum I think if my memory serves) That may account for changes that you mention.

Re: 2016 Suspension changes (effects certain lifts)

Total noob here and I'm hoping someone can prove me wrong, but my '16 wk2 limited with conventional suspension has a flange welded to the lower clevis on the front strut(s) that I have not seen in any of the pics/diagrams of the Bilstein, ARB/OME, or Icon offerings. The front sway bar attaches to the front strut via a connecting rod to this flange. I'm guessing this flange has something to do with why nobody seems to have a lift solution (other than RRO's spacer lift) for this MY so far. I'd upload a pic but I haven't figured out how to post with attachments yet.

I think you are required to meet a minimum post count number before the system will allow you to post pictures. Welcome some other noobs in the Introduce Yourself forum then try again.

Thanks Alludc - message sent via your build page, although it may be immaterial at this point.

It's looking like us '16 owners may be waiting a while for a solution. According to ARB, their Engineers are aware of the design changes but have not seen the '16 updates yet, let alone set a development timeline. Icon, Bilstein, and King weren't even aware of the updates to the wk2 platform.

I contacted RRO today and learned that while their lift itself works with the new suspension, their upper control arms are not compatable with the '16 suspension changes. Apparently there's been an update to the ball joint and RRO hasn't had a chance to revise their design.

I may have to settle for RRO's leveling kit for now while the aftermarket guys work out a solution. Hopefully the 275/55R20 BFG all terrain KO2's I'd like to install won't look too out of place!

Re: 2016 Suspension changes (effects certain lifts & lowering)

Will this impact dropping a '16 WK2 Limited? Or is it just prohibitive to those looking to lift their JGC's?

If the drop involves changing out the struts, it effects it yes. And personally, I always change struts with a lowering spring. The clevis mount on the 16-17 is different and as far as I know, no one is in R&D yet for that.

Re: 2016 Suspension changes (effects certain lifts & lowering)

Thanks for the quick reply.... I've got parts on order and will know soon enough whether or not this is going to be a serious problem.

Just about everything I've read and seen indicates that dropping on springs without a proper shock setup leads to blown shocks so my intent was to do everything at once. If I can't lower with a full setup then I might be left holding useless parts... :/

Re: 2016 Suspension changes (effects certain lifts & lowering)

So I crawled under the front end today and sure enough, there's a flange that attaches the sway bar end links directly to the strut... I'm not a suspension engineer, but I can't for the life of me understand why they would want to do this. No matter, it is what it is. I'm going to stop by the local dealer and see of the 2016 SRT has the same setup. If it does, I might be able to pull a part number and leverage those struts for my drop project.

Other than the flange on the front struts and subsequent relocation of the end link mount, is there anything else that's dramatically changed? Anything in the rear suspension setup?
