275/55/20 Question

I've got a non-QL Overland with 20" wheels, and while I don't hate the look and feel of the stock tires, I prefer the look of a bigger tire on the GC. I've read as much as I can find about tires that should fit without a lift, spacers, etc. and I believe the 275/55/20 is my tire?

I've read recommendations for the Nitto Grappler in this size, but I've got a local tire store offering Nitto Crossteks in the same size for about $200/ tire. Anyone familiar with the Crosstek and how it compares to the Grappler? I'd also appreciate hearing from anybody with 275/55 experience- whether the ride is dramatically different on the road, as I'm not doing any serious off road. Thanks.

Re: 275/55/20 Question

I have no info, but would love to see the stock 20s with some larger meats without a lift. Please post pics.

Re: 275/55/20 Question

I would tend to agree...

What has me baffled is that Rocky Road Outfitters, maker of the 2.5" lift, installed 275/55r20a on their prototype Jeep. They say that to fit anything larger will require fender trimming.

I have a hard time believing them when members are in fact installing 275/55r20s on non-lifted, non-QL Wk2s.

You should be fine. No comment as to the Nitto's as I have never used them but I have heard they are a great tire and are petty aggressive. Personally, I am looking for something a little less aggressive, like a Yokohama Geolander or a Cooper Discovery.

Re: 275/55/20 Question

I'm currently looking at doing the same thing to my QL overland with 20" rims. I like the look of the 20's but wanted something more offroad worthy in a tire than the Fortera that comes with. I've read on other forums that the 275/55/20 will fit without any rubbing on stock and/or QL jeeps at all levels park - OR2. I'm currently looking at 3 different tires in that size which are: Nitto TerraGrappler, Goodyear Silent Armor, or the Hankook Dynapro ATM. I'm leaning a bit towards the Silent Armor because it's the only one rated for severe service with the M+S on the side as well as a kevlar sidewall which makes me think it will be tough to puncture a hole in the sidewall like I've done to my fortera's before. Saying that, I've also read lots of good trail reviews of the dynapro ATM. The TerraGrappler was in my group too because I like the design and it comes in the size, other than that I haven't heard/seen too many other reviews on it being put on jeeps. I know they're popular and the tread design looks like it would bite pretty good offroad too.

Re: 275/55/20 Question

I have the Nitto TG's on my overland (in 285/60/18) and have been happy with them over the last 3000+ miles. They are quiet for an AT tire (slightly noisier than the stock 20" goodyears) and ride/balance smoothly and handle well (solid sidewall, good steering response)
