285/50/r20 Ventus ST's on stock Summit wheels??...

Ok...so I've searched the forums for an answer on this, but to no avail...and it seems to be an unresolved dilemma at this point.

So...my dealer has agreed to swap the OEM tires out for Hankook Ventus ST's prior to taking delivery of my Summit in Sept.

The question is, do I upsize to 285/50/r20's...or keep the stock size 265/50/r20's on the factory 20x8's...until I can purchase aftermarket 20x10's???...(once I have 20x10's, I'll be using 295/45/r20's).

There seems to be some concern about mounting that wide of a tire on 8" wide rims...although, Hankook's spec's show that an 8" rim will work...even though it's at the bottom end of the recommended fitment range.

The narrowest rim size with 285/50's mentioned on the forums has been 9 inches (which is irrelevant to anyone using the stock rims, since it will fit different, given the offset etc.)

I know it'll will give a little bit more sidewall, a little more tire bulge, and a little more tread width (none of which are negatives for me)...but, IMHO the stock size looks too skinny.

Do you all have any advice on this matter???

TIA!

You CAN put a 285 on the stock 20x8. It's deffinately not reccomended but it will work. If you plan on going to 20x10's you may be able to get away with this for a while. But going with a 275/55/20 will give you the same height as a 285

Re: 285/50/r20 Ventus ST's on stock Summit wheels??...

Thanks for the info...and although I know that the little bit of extra sidewall will absorb bumps in the road a bit better...my goal isn't taller tires, just wider (while staying within acceptable tolerance of the overall OEM diameter, to avoid speedo issues)...main reason I'll be switching to 295/45's later on with the 20x10's.

I'll never understand why the factory decided to put 8" rims on it instead of 9's...given that a 9" rim offers more options for 20" tire sizes...it's almost as if they are living in the past, when we saw 7" rims everywhere as OEM & everyone wished for 8" rims...lol.

they'll fit the wheels like previously said, but because the offset of the stock wheel you probably won't clear, w/out spacers that is...

If you are going to aftermarket down the road I suggest sticking with the stock size. You won't be gaining that much with the 285's and you won't like the way the sidewalk bulges. I would also recommend the Michelin Latitude Tour HP over the Hankook. The ride, handling and performance of the Michelin is one of the best I've had in an SUV. Sure , they are a bit more but you are already spending a ton on the vehicle, don't short change on the one thing that has the biggest effect on ride comfort.

Re: 285/50/r20 Ventus ST's on stock Summit wheels??...

A 275/55/20 will not give you the same height as a 285/50/20, the 275 is 3/4" larger. As stated above you wont gain much width with the 285's if you stay with the stock 8" wheel. I would definitely not buy the Michelin's over the Handkook's...just on looks alone not to mention the price and the sub par ratings for the HP. Even the non HP is a better tire. Another great tire in the 285/50/20 size is the Yokohama Prada Spec-X. If it says "touring" in the description save it for grandpa's old Buick.

Not sure where you get your information but the HP Tour is a world apart from the goodyears that come on the truck and the parada's were horrible. I know, I used them for about 100 miles before I had discount take them off and put on the michelin's. Where are you getting that the non-HP is the better tire? Based on a discussion I had with a Michelin engineer I'd say that statement is born of ignorance, not real world experience.

There isnt much to choose from in a performance tire in our size. The toyo and nitto might be a better solution but I haven't tried them so I can't comment. I do know the parada's are horrid, way too soft with far too much tread squirm and slip angle. The michelin's are very linear, handle the twisties very well and are 100% smooth and stable well into triple digits. I poled a number of guys I know who run Cayenne's and the one common resonse was their surprise at how well the tour HP's work compared to the "off" brands and these are guys who aren't babying their rides.

Re: 285/50/r20 Ventus ST's on stock Summit wheels??...

Well...it seems this discussion has gotten a little bit "off-topic"...lol.

The question posed was strictly in regards to the fitment of the size 285/50/r20 on the stock rims, being that they are 20x8's...and that an 8" rim is at the bottom of the "recommended rim size" scale per the manufacturer.

If you will take note of what was mentioned above...the tires of choice are Hankook Ventus ST's...this part of the equation has already been decided upon and confirmed...hence, no debate is needed on it.

With that said...there are plenty of "other" threads on this forum to debate which is the best Brand/Model of tire on the market...so if you don't mind, can we move that discussion elsewhere please...and get back on topic with regard to fitment??? Thanks

It seems no one has been able to give a solid answer yet about this specific fitment, just theories...and I think it would be helpful to other owners on the forum as well, to confirm whether or not it will work without any issues in terms of safety or functionality.

So...out of curiosity, does anyone have any answers about this, that are factual & confirmed as opposed to just theoretical?? It would be nice to find out (before I have them order the tires)...ya know?!

TIA

Re: 285/50/r20 Ventus ST's on stock Summit wheels??...

MichiganFan,

I don't have direct experience with the 285/50's on an 8" rim but I do with a 275/45 on a similar 8" rim. The sidewall pinch was borderline with the 275's and I can't image doing 285's on those width rims.

I will reiterate that I think you should maintain the stock size on the stock rims. You won't get any additional performance from the 285's and you may induce some undesirable handling traits and reduced tire wear.

Re: 285/50/r20 Ventus ST's on stock Summit wheels??...

Well...after lots of research on the differences in actual sizing from multiple tire brands, and what owners have reported to be confirmed fitments with the OEM 20"s...we have finally reached a conclusion.

Since the OEM Goodyears basically suck & aren't worth even testing out...we have advised the dealer to swap out to either Hankook Ventus ST's or Cooper Zeon LTZ's...in a 275/55/r20. We opted for the OEM size...but apparently the country is experiencing a bit of a tire shortage...and it's nearly impossible to find anything of quality as a full set in the OEM sizing...so we're going to upsize a bit for the time being. We saw pics of that size mounted on several JGC's and it's tolerable for now...we'll swap out the rims later on & upgrade to the 295/45's at that time. Meanwhile...it's a waiting game...we take delivery of the Jeep in a week & will find out at that time which tire the dealer found to swap to.

I can personally vouch for the tire shortage...our leased car is being returned in a week also, and we had to replace the rear tires. We called every tire shop in a 150mi radius & none of them had any tires that would fit in stock (nor in their warehouses), this included 5 different sizes for fitment. They said it would be a month waiting on tires to arrive for installation...but that their overseas counterparts had full stock of any tire or size needed. So we were kinda stuck waiting for tires to arrive...but in the process we got lucky...a tire shop called couple days later & said they received 2 tires that would work for us, but they had never been ordered (they were not expecting them, apparently shipped to them accidentally)...I can tell ya, we did not hesitate...the wheels were at their shop for mounting within 45mins!!!!...lol. We did not care what tire or size, just as long as they fit & complied with the lease return guidelines...afterall, we're only using them for 2 weeks!!! ;-)

Just thought I'd make everyone aware...there are plenty of articles published regarding the shortage if you search for them.

Are you thinking of the 295's for the front or a staggered setup? My fronts are stock 265's on a 9" wide wheel and they protrude just a little from the black plastic molding. My rears are 295's on 10" wide wheels which are really fat...IMO they would look silly on the front.

Re: 285/50/r20 Ventus ST's on stock Summit wheels??...

Our intention is to match the new 2012 SRT8's tire & wheel setup, even if we have to swap out spindles/knuckles & brakes...thoughts of an SRT8 front clip are also of consideration...in any case it comes with 295's all around, no reason we can't match it...we may have to wait until enough SRT8's hit the street so the aftermarket can take measurements & figure out the engineering required, but we're sure it can be done...and we are OK with waiting until that time, but it will eventually happen when all the pieces come together. :-)
