There's no harm in using a spare that is narrower than the tires at the four corners, so pick a tire that's the same diameter and narrow enough to allow the lid to close normally. (you may need to remove the foam storage organization to fit the larger diameter tire, however) The OEM spare is narrower than the OEM road tires...

Absolutely, as long as diameters are equal. Good point.
Another point for those who upgrade to larger brakes is to be sure the spare clears the calipers.

That is the size I put on. It fits in the well with the bins removed. The lid was a couple mm above level initially, but It actually seems to have settled in a bit and it's nearly level now.

The tire I ordered was the bridgestone dueler H/T 684 and it was only $111 when I bought it. Well worth the peace of mind imo.

Wonder if the spare lost a little air.. good thought to run it on minimal air recommend for the tire, to help it fit.

I use a 255/70/18, I am running 275/55/20 as well.
