5 tire rotation and TPM?

I understand the rears to front same side and fronts crossed over to rear. My question is to put my spare tire into the mix for even tread wear, which tire would you choose to switch out in the rotations? Second question for you all, does the TPM in the spare deactivate on it's own while not on the road and reactivates once it starts spinning?

Re: 5 tire rotation and TPM?

I have an Overland with the 20's and I know for sure there is not a full size spare back there. Do the models with the smaller wheels come with a full size spare? I don't even think it has a tpms, but I could be wrong on that part.

Re: 5 tire rotation and TPM?

Same here, I just replaced my four 20's and 18" steel spare with five 18" Saharas, I still need to buy a tpm for the spare. Some packages do come with a full size spare though.

No problem. I've been doing a 5 tire rotation on my JK with 37s every 5000km and they've been wearing good and even. On my wifes GC I'll do a 4 tire every 10,000km as they're all terrain with considerably less lugs.

Re: 5 tire rotation and TPM?

The tire/wheel in the WK2 full size spare package is not the same as the other 4, its not suitable to put into a 5 tire rotation. In fact the 20s have an 18 inch steel wheel spare. I found out recently that a full size spare hasn't meant identical tire/wheel for several years now.

Now if you replace the OEM spare with one identical to the other four, and include a TPMS, you will have no problem (or replace the OEM road wheels with the steel wheels the spare uses). The WK2 will not monitor the spare's TPMS, however.

I havent done a 5 tire rotation in 10 years. I haven't purchased a new car/truck in the last 12 years that had a suitable spare. The last Jeep that came with 5 identical tires, the WJ, I 5-tire rotated the OEMs. When they wore out I picked the best one for a spare and purchased only 4 high quality new tires.

If you read the third post he has 5 rims and tires from a JK Sahara.

Why even use the spare? Eventually you'll have to replace 5 tires instead of four.

OP was just asking. In the case of a GC I wouldn't. He bought rims ok a JK which come with a spare of the same size with the same rim. When you do a 5 tire rotation they're all worn out at the same time, then if you're changing types or sizes you haven't got one new tire. That and when mounted on the back of a Wrangler they get UV damage and should be run not left to rot on the tire holder.

Re: 5 tire rotation and TPM?

The oem doughnut spare is a joke for 4WD vehicles. Having a good full size spare can save myself from a sticky situation if I get a flat offroad or in the snow, plus if I only wear down four of my tires then add a new tire to replace a flat then there is more stress put on the driveline and diffs. I will get 20% more miles out of five too.
