Re: 8-Speed Box Before Long?

To me it's a significant performance issue with the V6, especially off the line and most especially on the Overland 4WD. In addition to the Overland I drove the base GC with 2WD, and the takeoff difference is real; it weighs something like 400 pounds less than the fully tricked out Overland V6, and the added lard makes enough difference that the 8-speed box should be a solid plus with the Overland 4WD from 0-30. Jeep could get cracking now with the EPA using the box currently available from Europe or whatever version they are using to get MY2011 approval for the 200 and others.

It is disappointing for the Chrysler line to be producing 8-speed models hither and yon but leaving the GC with the vintage box. If they can get other 2011 models manufactured with the better transmission, they shouldn't be giving their legendary SUV yesteryear's grandfathered hardware.

Agreed. The 8-spd will make the gears much shorter and definitely should improve acceleration off the line. If I find that it's definitely going into the 2012, I'll wait to order my JGC but if it won't be until 2013 or 14, I'll just pass. It won't be that significant of a difference to wait 2 to 3 years IMO.

Re: 8-Speed Box Before Long?

Question:
when will the current model GC recieve Chryslers brand new 8 speed transmission? Also, what kind of fuel economy increase can we expect from such a change?

Answer:
We have publically stated that we will use the 8-speed in multiple future applications. I cannot state when for Grand Cherokee. Industry FE improvements for 2-3 speeds is in the 5-10 percent range.

This sounds like there could be a mid-production surprise... you never know. My brother-in-law works for a division of Magna, and he says they are currently in a bid process for the 8-Speed tranny.
I owned a '96 Limited and loved it, then in 2003 got a Hummer H2, really great truck, especially in the winter months when we get lots of snow.
Now i'm waiting for the Overland to offer the 8-Speed tranny, after more than 7 years of paying big $$$ for gas, i wanna start to pay even less with the 8-Speed tranny.
My brother got a 2011 X5 3.5d and that engine and tranny are great together, I would like a similar experience with the GCO.

I'm just as curious as anyone and I know what the Jeep engineers have said but according to Paolo Ferrero (Chrylser Senior VP of Powertrain) the new powertrain will achieve a 25 percent increase in fuel economy by 2014! I wonder which is true because if that's the case then we're talking a 4-5 mpg increase instead of a 1-2 mpg increase which is a BIG difference. The article talks about the ZF group and that Chrysler would import the engines before ramping up production at the Indiana plant in 2013.

Re: 8-Speed Box Before Long?

I think the possibility of improved acceleration times is good for the 8 speed, but I imagine it would be programmed to "short shift" for those economy improvements, similar to the way they do this in the Corvette. I imagine it would start in 2nd, shift over to 4th, and then right to 6th when in low load acceleration mode such as city traffic. You wouldn't be using all the gears changes unless you were on the go pedal, and then the engine is sucking gas.

Re: 8-Speed Box Before Long?

http://www.wkjeeps.com/future_jeeps.htm#12GRAND

If you scroll down to the 2012 Future SRT 8 information you see the following:

Production startup July 2011
Sales launch: September 1, 2011
New: 8-speed automatic dual-clutch transmission
All-new 2nd generation SRT8 model (new 6.4L Hemi, ~504 hp estimated)
SRT8 premiere: NY Auto show April 20, 2011

Now if, in-fact, the 8spd will be available for the 2012 SRT8, I would HAVE to think it will be available in the regular versions of the 2012 JGC as well. Seems logical anyway but I guess we'll find out soon enough if it's really going into production in July WITH the imported 8spd from Germany.

Re: 8-Speed Box Before Long?

I would imagine that the SRT8 would be a paddle shift type, and not necessarily pass that along to the mere mortal models!

LOL...well Paddle Shift isn't exactly an "exclusive" option anymore. The Nissan Maxima has it too. I have it on my G37 and it's nice but to be honest, I don't play with it too much. I wouldn't care whether the JGC had it or not but who knows, maybe they'll put it in.

Re: 8-Speed Box Before Long?

I would think they would want to differentiate the SRT8 as much as possible, and agreed, I don't think it's necessarily a 'Jeep thing', needing to be included within the normal model range.

Bah you're killing me! I'm on the verge of buying now but if the 8 speed will be out for the 2012 model I could wait. I agree that they wouldn't go though all the work of putting in a new transmission for the SRT8 models only it will be on all or none. What would the cost increase be for the 8speed?

In response to your question, my answer here is by no means scientific but for a comparison it should give you some idea at least. When I was looking at the 2008 Infiniti G35 Sedan I found out that Infiniti was moving to a 3.7 litre V-6 in place of the then 3.5 litre V-6 as well as adding a 7spd auto tranny to replace the 5spd tranny. The base price increase was $1815 with the new engine and tranny. I would guess maybe around $800 more or so but that's just a guess. We won't know for sure until an official release comes from Chrysler on the production date of the 8spd in the regular JGC along with the base price increase. Bottom line is that there will definitely be some type of increase in price which is why I say if you're looking at it purely from a fuel savings perspective, you need to do a cost benefit analysis based on how much you drive, how long you expect to keep your JGC etc. to see when your 'break even' point is (not including the interest you'll pay on the price increase over the life of the loan if you finance). It should definitely improve performance and off the line acceleration though with shorter gears.
