Dealers almost-always seem to give 87 octane for that first tank; even on cars that require or recommend 93.

Re: 89 octane for 5.7 Hemi recommended?

I have actually noticed a suprising difference when driving between 87 and 89/92. With 87 the jeep is not as quick to respond to throttle. It will sort of hesitate and then go, while with mid grade or premium it is much smoother and quicker to respond. Also it seems to be much easier to keep it in eco mode when using higher grade than when using 87. I don't know if the eco lamp directly equates to being in 4 cylinder mode or not but if it does then the additional time spent in 8 cyl mode using 87 grade might put a pretty decent dent in fuel economy.

There is a definite difference in throttle response. I have always used 89 and figured what the heck, I will try a tank of 87. Step on the throttle and there is a noticeable delay.

Re: 89 octane for 5.7 Hemi recommended?

Suspect the roll on program for 87 is different from 89. Would need to watch the actual throttle % value but suspect it is watching for detonation & opening slower. Prolly has nothing to do with power or mpg, rather how fast it responds.

Re: 89 octane for 5.7 Hemi recommended?

Regular is $4.15 in the resort areas of Vail and Avon, CO so I wait till I have a reason to go towards the Costco store 20 miles away where it is $3.85 today.

Anyone know why Costco doesn't have mid-grade, only regular and premium?
I fill up half with premium, let the pump shut down, re-insert my card for regular. I can usually judge pretty close to half and half.

Today my mileage for the 2012 5.7 for the last 3,000 miles of mixed interstate and local mountain road driving is 18.6 mpg calculated. EVIC was 17.8 but had just come up a big hill after seeing 19.5 or so on the interstate. Usually the two are closer together.
