Air bags to increase ground clearance?

Coming up for 3 years with our 2014 Laredo CRD; 18" wheels; not a quadralift but self-levelling shocks.
Been very pleased with it - up to 65k now, 25k of that towing 3 ton caravan around Aus.

2 issues I'm concerned with:
* limited ground clearance when going off road
* strain on the rear suspension (esp shocks) when towing.

Will fitting some after market airbags help solve both issues?
I don't want to permanently raise the rear ride height - but have a compressor so can use it for when going off road to raise increase the ground clearance, or when towing to 'beef up' rear suspension.

Thanks
Phil

Re: Air bags to increase ground clearance?

I have looked into this as well but i was wanting all 4 corners done. I emailed alot of companies that deal with the airbags but none have a on the shelf kit available as they say the Jeep Grand Cherokee does not have enough room. But you could use the mopar stuff as a user has done on here to run huge wheels. Not sure of the thread will need to look for it.
But you could use a helper airbag called polyair bag from airbag man, polyair spring or coil rite. They do airbags that fit inside the coil spring.

Keep in mind that raising it via airbags increases your spring rate, and you'll lose articulation as a result.

There are some air lift bags that go into the coil spring itself, so it may work in the rear. Perhaps you can go with some air struts in the front, but that's a lot of fab work.

Re: Air bags to increase ground clearance?

Thanks for the replies.

Rang the airbag man - their kit is just a 'helper' kit to maintain ride height when towing - won't lift the car.

Not looking for a permanent rise - but what the quadralift does. I'm guessing a retrofit of that would be difficult/expensive.

Sounds like it would be better to wait until the next car, and order the quadralift this time.

Cheers
Phil
