Re: ALL NEW NITTO NT421Q in 265/50 VR 20

It was interesting when I was in the LA area last week for a business event...saw several billboards for the NT421Q tires along the way between LAX and Anaheim. Around here, nobody has them available for sale...

Okay now some would make the argument that since the Grand Cherokee is electronically limited to 115 mph there is not need for a tire with a speed rating higher than T (118).

In actuality the higher the speed rating the better tire will perform in cornering and under heavy braking, so putting a V rated tire on a SUV that is only capable of 115 still can add to the overall performance.

Who knows maybe soon these tuners will be able to lift the limiter if you can prove you have H rated (130) tires or higher. Out the box the WK2 can achieve speeds in the 130 to 135 mph range. You might be crazy to even approach those speeds but it is possible.

For me most of my commute is two lane mountain roads so I like more confidence in handling with an nice performance tire.

Oh I forgot to mention another benefit to these tires which is the rim protector bead, there is a lot of rubber protecting the edge from curb rash.

Now your only worry should be banging the spokes on some high obstacle.
Typically are softer compound and wear out more quickly correct?

Softer compounds are usually typical of Ultra high performance summer tires and you can tell by the low treadwear numbers that accompany that class of tires usually in the 180 to 320 range.

All season tires are usually a compromise of sorts since they have to be decent in the dry, wet and light snow/mud. The other factor is longevity so with a more durable tread compound the traction rating is usually lower. Also in some cases the treadlife is no better than the best UHP tire.

Nowadays there are so many technologies and rubber formulas that can be combined to make a better tire on a whole.

We have the benefit of this tire which was designed for these heavy Crossover/SUV. And it also employs a combination of many thing learned over the years. One section of the tread NITTO claims was taken from their snow tire. So hopefully they offer good performance in all areas for most of their treadlife.

I usually look for a light tire with a high treadwear but what I have noticed with those lighter tires is that they don't last long because there is not alot of rubber on the tread portion.

Lower unsprung weight will help with fuel economy and handling but at the expense of faster tire replacement.

The NT421Q in our 20" stock size weighs in at 40 lbs. which is an average of 3lbs heavier than other tires I have considered. To me this is a good indicator that this tire will have a decent treadlife of possibly 40,000 plus miles to most owners.

In comparison with a tire like the TOYO open country H/T the reviews on those tires are all good based on the longevity aspect of them and they weigh about the same for the 265/50 20 are ar also available in V rated.

Long story short...... this is a new tire it looks promising and we like many are the first ones to evaluate them and put miles on a tire that has only been on the market 7 months from introduction and roughly 5 months available to consumer. The good thing about tires are if you don't like them you may be able to sell them to someone else who doesn't care and try another brand.

These are XL rated tires with a large treadwear rating. Compound is not softer than the GYs.

XL rated (higher load capacity) tires have stronger (thicker with more material) sidewalls, making them heavier in comparison, all things considered. These tires weigh more because of the XL features, not so much tread life.

Specs say rated for 75K tread life for H & V speed ratings and 60K for W speed rated sizes.

The TOYO Open Country H/T (reinforced model) offers a similar treadlife warranty, but many factors contiribute to treadlife.

Road conditions
Rotatation
Inflation pressure
Operating temp
driving style

Re: ALL NEW NITTO NT421Q in 265/50 VR 20

Just bought a set of 245/60R18's for my 2010 Grand Limited a few weeks ago and so far seemed great in wet and dry conditions - but they're surprisingly good in SNOW as well!

Truthfully, I didn't give them much hope - and I'm in Newfoundland, so we get absolutely pounded with winter storms. IMO most performance tire companies don't do well entering the SUV/Light Truck market - especially in All Season & SNOW Tire capacities; but the 421Q's were excellent!

We just had ~4-5" of snow again overnight and they performed really well this morning in snow/slush - just as good, if not better than the OEM Fortera's that they're replacing.

In heavy rain they evacuate the water quite well and still hold up under harsh braking/cornering - dry weather is even better, ride quality is great and the sidewalls are a bit forgiving on road-bumps and off-road driving. I wouldn't go too deep into the mud with these given the tread design - then again, that's not what these tires are for - so like most things, use common sense.

Not sure what MSRP is in other areas, but I purchased mine NEW online and they were a steal at ~155.00 per tire. Highly recommend this tire - very surprised it's as good as advertised for this price-point.

Re: ALL NEW NITTO NT421Q in 265/50 VR 20

Greetings
I have no idea why I did not take the decision to replace the stock tires (GYs) with Nitto NT421Q from the beginning.
They look really good and feel great when driving. It is toooooo early to judge but at least I am happy for now

Re: ALL NEW NITTO NT421Q in 265/50 VR 20

Mine now have over 10,000 miles on them. I've rotated them once--I plan to do that at each oil change--and they have NO obvious wear.

I'm VERY happy with them.
