Alternate tires for the Overland?

I was wondering if anyone knew of different/better tires for the Overland with the 20" rims.

Are there any tires with thicker rubber that will fit on the 20", provide a somewhat smoother/quieter ride. Has anyone put non stock tires on their stock rims?

Thanks for the help!

Alternate tires for the Overland?

I put the factory sized (265-55/20) Falcons on it as the Duratrecs were $400 more for the set and I had $700 avail. at the time. I will try the Goodyears next in a 275-65/20 or some such.

Edit: I forgot to describe them. The ride isn't quite as smooth as the factory Goodyears buy the tread is more aggressive. Traction is very good though and they are still quiet.

They are the Ziex S/tz04 model.

For me, it was a budget thing and the Forteras are not an aggressive tire. Contis aren't typ. in my area and anything aggressive (Duratracs, BFG AT/MT, Nittos, etc) are a special order in either the factory size or larger.

I put Nitto 421Q A/S on my 12 GC Summit with 20 in wheels. 20,000miles so far. Great tire in wet weather and quiet, smooth ride compared to the stock Goodyears. Handling improved as well IMHO.

Continental LX20s. Quiet, smooth. Excellent in rain, much better handling in corners, superior dry traction (this is all relative to the Forteras). Probably one of the best all-around tires I have owned.

Michelin Defender LTX's... BIG improvement all around. MUCH quieter! Haven't had them in the snow yet, just got them a month ago. But if they are as good as the M/S-2's (same tread pattern) I will be very satisfied.

Re: Alternate tires for the Overland?

I got some Duratrac intalled on the optional 18" wheels after only about 1500kms on the new Jeep. Noisier than the original Michelin for sure, but traction in deep snow (Quebec) like nothing else.

Having said that, I am just now seeing something weird for the first time. The noise level has been going up little by little. I just realized days ago that the wear on the front tires is uneven. I was able to identify (thanks to google) something called "scalloping" (?!). Never seen anything quite like it before. So here starts the troubleshooting phase... A handful of "reasons" are listed, just have to go through the list and see what caused this in my case. I will also browse through this forum to see if I'm the only one seeing this.

Other than that, Duratrac are noisier, yes - not for everyone, but will get you through holes where you can't help but wonder what the heck you are doing with such a nice machine !

Cheers,
Jean
