Any Reason Not to Get ORA II?

I want to get the ORAII for my Overland because it's only $275 and it gets me 18 inch wheels and tires. Sure the latitudes aren't the best, but I think they are better all around than the 20 inch tires and I think it's cheaper for me to just add ORAII than to sell my 20 inch tires and wheels and to buy 18s. My question is this - I think tow hooks are helpful because you just never know what could happen, and I'm sure the trail rated badge is nice for resale but I will probably have little to no use for the skid plates. Is it bad to have these but basically have no use for them? Is there a downside to having them? Like could they increase rust under the skid plates or do they add weight in a way that makes it bad?

My thinking is, money wise it's better to get ORAII and have the trail rated badge than it is to worry about having skid plates that I don't need.

Does anyone agree or disagree?

Re: Any Reason Not to Get ORA II?

I had to make a similar decision when I bought my Limited. The factory skid plates add about 90 LBS, and that is the only downside. On a V8, the extra 90 LBS is not noticeable, but on a V6 already taxed because of vehicle weight, it may be an issue.

The positives you mention are all valid - 18" wheels and tires from the factory, and factory tow hooks.

If I were you, I would get it.

Re: Any Reason Not to Get ORA II?

There is no down side to the skid plates beside a bit of weight and it may take a few minutes longer to drop a tank for repair. You wouldn't know you needed the plates until you needed them, they are good insurance against underbody damage. ORA II with the V8 also gets you QD (rear ELSD).

thanks everyone. i guess if worse comes to worse and it seemed like the weight of the skid plates was negatively effecting the V6 i could always have them removed.

Re: Any Reason Not to Get ORA II?

All depends on what you plan on doing with your Jeep. 18's for sure for rock crawling, but I actually prefer the stock 20's for sand and mud over the stock 18's I had before.

Re: Any Reason Not to Get ORA II?

I don't plan on doing any intentional off roading. Just some snow and maybe the occasional dirt or gravel road.

Re: Any Reason Not to Get ORA II?

I couldn't find the off road package on a 12 GC Overland, so instead of waiting for an order, I purchased my vehicle. I added all the skids and noticed no difference on gas mileage. Glad for the extra protection as I do plan to wheel.

Re: Any Reason Not to Get ORA II?

I did not get the OR package as I felt the Trail Rated badge might hurt resale value. It could be viewed a source of possible abuse. I did get front and TC skid plates just for piece of mind. I saw no decrease in power or decrease in MPG on my V6.

Re: Any Reason Not to Get ORA II?

The badge comes off easy. It's just double sided tape.

The best way to see if any Jeep has really been offroaded or not is to look for skids or rock rails and then look for 'scars' on them.

So if I was contemplating a purchase of 'trail rated' jeep, I'd be OK as long as the underside was clean. That's no guarantee, of course, but it's good enough for me.

Re: Any Reason Not to Get ORA II?

Off-Road Adventure 2 is Jeep cool-ness, adds value, and is useful for off-roading. I had no rust or other issues with the skid plates on my '93 Grand Cherokee, but I live in California so the conditions are not harsh.

I disagree it will be worth more with trail rated badge if their are no noticeable signs of abuse.More capable off-road vehicle in situations if needed in bad weather.
