Re: Best A/T tyre in 20 inch and 275/55/20 size

Thanks all for your advice.
I will go with Nitto Terra Grapplers 275/55/20.
I am in Dominican Republic, so i will receive them in a couple of weeks, because i am placing them in a container of my company that will be shipping over here in a couple of weeks.
one last question...i remember that there are a couple of users running this same tire. Any comments on how they are and i have read that they dont rub in any QL setting and turning the wheel all the way to any direction, can any user confirm this?

All the guys I have seen running the Terra Grapplers in 275/55/20 have not had any rubbing issues even in park mode.

Felipito, what kind of trail conditions are you talking anout? I have visions of the DR having rain forests, monsoon mud, and unkept trails, is that an overstatement?

He mentioned only mud. IMO He needs a MT if the mud he is talking about is like the swampy stuff we have here in Florida, but they do not make a 275/55/20 MT that I have ever found.

Thanks for your message, i have read your interesting stories!!! Nice!!!

regarding my quest for this tires is that i like hunting and fishing. Fishing is not that bad because almost always you can find a dock and place your boat easily in the water. but for hunting there a couple of scenarios, one if i go to a dry place, then there is nothing wrong here, lets say that a 4x2 can reach. Another Scenario is when there is humid and light water and there is 2-3 inches of mud with some pot holes (nothing serious) but with the stock tires i was slipping all over the place and was not in control of the jeep, this was what happened and i got stock and because i was slipping so much touched a rock dam in the drivers side which scratched my back rim. I am more than sure that with AT tires i would have been ok. And finally third scenario is heavy mud trails and mud holes which are difficult even with MT tires, because you can get stuck when you dig yourself and your belly is only the mud and the jeep is suspended because of lack of clearance. this trails i will try to avoid but if i am in companion of a friend 4x4 we can try it and we pull each other out if we get stock. I had a Nissan Frontier Dakar Rally Edition Turbo Diesel with MT tires 305/70/16 on it (see picture) which i did like to adventure more because i was confident that i would make it, i just need to try ant test this WK2 to know its limits, since i new the Nissan limits.

Dominican Republic, has a Rain Forrest climate but only in the open country (parts where they are not city and is poor) there is Gravel Roads and we have many Sugar, rice and other grain fields which are red mud trails that when they are dry it is ok, but when it rains it is slippery and very muddy. Of course we are a sub developed poor country but all the city is normal city roads. We have beautiful beaches which is the main atraction for tourists.

Please tell me if this was your question...remember English is my second language....hehehehe/

Re: Best A/T tyre in 20 inch and 275/55/20 size

^Felipito, it sure seems as though you may lean towards more trail and perhaps aggressive conditions than you might high speed pavement, is that correct? I would also guess that your Frontier was much more offroad capable than the WK2, it appears to be closer to a Wrangler in setup, or perhaps in between a Wrangler and WK2? Also looks like you were running both AT's up front and MT's in the back.

Based on your local swampy, perhaps remote, sometimes muddy to the belly conditions, I would again strongly suggest that you consider both an 18" wheelset and MT rubber, along with skid plates and tow hooks. You can then save the 20" set for street use and keep 'em looking good.

While I love my Firestone Destination AT's for trail/snow/pavement versatility, we are located in a dry high alpine climate here, where mud typically is short-term and shallow. By all accounts the Terra Grappler's are more aggressive than the Firestone AT's, but less so than a MT tire.

YMMV. Happy trails.

Is that Frontier 2wd? I noticed the rear tires look like a much larger size vs the fronts and on a 4x4 that is not a good idea because when you lock it in 4wd the rear tires are spinning slower (because they are larger) than the fronts which can cause damage to your transfer case.

Re: Best A/T tyre in 20 inch and 275/55/20 size

The frontier is 4x4 with 3.0turbo diesel engine it had 305/70/16 in the back becuase that was the size that they had and since it fitted i accepted it, and in the front had 265/75/16 because anything bigger would have rubbed.
i dont like having MT in the front because of the uneven wear causes too much vibration and noise and driving 24 hour car like that is really annoying. I had MT for a long time back and front and when i changed to AT in the front i could not believe the comfort of no noise/vibration that i promised my self not to run MT in the front.

about the size being different...many people told me this but to be honest i used it many times and not problem what so ever....was i lucky or does this not apply....i dont know, but no problem here. Sold the vehicle with 120km and 6 1/2 years and it was new. it did had a Patrol Engine ZD30 nissan engine which is more powerful than a normal diesel frontier or navara.

And about the Frontier being more capable than the WK2...hummm the difference is this is a new car...my first new car..and i want to baby it for now...heheh

I am still getting used to driving a automatic transmission...the frontier was manual which for me is a plus in Offroad...because you can play with throttle and clutch and impulse, i have to now how to use the impulse, gear, speed and throttle position on a automatic before i can say the frontier is better. But with those big tires (the ones in the Frontier) i always could brag about going here and there...but it was because of the big tires not the capability of the vehicle.

The transmission is one of the things i need to get to know better...if i change to tip tronic in off road or continue in automatic...i need practice. In my frontier which i always had manual...it can natural.

I love this subject...what are your opinions....

Do you have the tow package? If so, put a shackle receiver into the tow hitch so you can hook a strap safely to it.

So...keep us all updated of your results!!

My bad, I forgot to say that I'll be putting those tires on a 20X9 and not the stock 20X8 wheels.
