Re: Best Tire for the Asphalt Loving Jeep

Thank you for that information. I'm going to have to go back tomorrow and ask them for the results of a road force test. It was enough of a vibration for me to immediately notice and then go "oh shit, did I just make a huge mistake?"

I know the rim isn't bent unless they bent it. I never had this issue before. Has to be something with the tire.

Re: Best Tire for the Asphalt Loving Jeep

I'm new to Jeep. Just got a '15 High Altitude with the OEM Fortera's. Before that, I drove Infiniti FX35 and FX37. Got great comfort, wear, traction in rainy south Florida with Bridgestone Dueler HL Alenza Plus. High rating and one of the few with 80,000 mile warranty. Tire Rack gives it a high score. Costco has them for hundreds less that any local tire shop including Firestone. I plan on them when my stock tires are shot.

I got the Michelin Premier LTX 275/55-20 on my 14' Summit. Great Tires, No Rubbing, Better handling in rain, snow, dry.... overall much better and you'll be happy I guarantee it. Everyone knows Michelin's are the best overall tires... people just try to compare other brands to them to save a couple bucks which I completely agree with. If you're on a website looking for opinions... you're probably looking for the best.. not second best. JMO

Thanks for the post. Already considering dumping the Fortera's on my 2015. Had the Michelins on my on my 2011, so I know what I'm missing.

HUGE DIFFERENCE!

I went back to my jeep dealership about the vibration in the wheel. Turns out the Tech had the machine set to 17" rims instead of 20". Dont know why or how, but its resolved now. The tires are incredibly better.

Re: Best Tire for the Asphalt Loving Jeep

IMPORTANT::::QUADRALIFT::: Even if you go to the dealership for an alignment, make absolutely sure they know about the WHEEL ALIGNMENT MODE. It is in the UConnect under settings, then SUSPENSION. Also make SURE they use the specs for the QUADRALIFT.

Found out the hard way

PS one more point about alignments. I was very fortunate to have an excellent technician do mine. He said he doubts an accurate alignment is done by any factories based on the number of alignments he does on new cars with less than 5000 miles. I'm guessing they're installed pretty close and are supposed to be checked at the dealership at prep???

Re: Best Tire for the Asphalt Loving Jeep

I haven't taken the photos yet. My girl needs a bath but I'm going out of town.

I'll take some later to post. I'll take newer ones some time next week when she's all cleaned up and looking proper.

Re: Best Tire for the Asphalt Loving Jeep

UPDATE, QUESTION, & PHOTO:

Ive had the tires for about two weeks now. Today was the first day that I have done more than 30 consecutive miles at consistent highway speeds.

Couple Questions:
- When you are driving your jeep on the highway above 65mpg, how much feedback do you get in the wheel?
- If you took your hands off the wheel, would you see it vibrating a ton or none at all (assuming relatively smooth highway)

I want to gauge the response to that before I post my thoughts after driving for a while.

But here she is, all clean and with those new shoes

Re: Best Tire for the Asphalt Loving Jeep

When you say feed back do you mean a constant vibration in the steering wheel while highway cruising or only a momentary vibration in the steering wheel when you hit small bumps or imperfections in the road? There should be no constant vibration at all, the steering wheel should not move and it should be smooth. If you are getting momentary feedback through the wheel when hitting bumps and road imperfections that is normal you are going to get some feed back over imperfections.
If you have a constant steering wheel vibration at highway speeds then take it back, the balance still isn't right or you have tires that are out of round either way they need to fix it. My steering wheel is perfectly smooth at 80 mph with my Michelins.

Re: Best Tire for the Asphalt Loving Jeep

My gut feeling is something isnt right with these tires. My wheel seems to constantly be giving me feedback on even the smoother of roads around here. I dont know if its me over analyzing it or if there actually is something wrong.

With my Foreteras, i never noticed feedback in the wheel and the ride tended to be pretty smooth. These Defender LTX make the ride much more stiff and it feels like im fighting the car more.

On a side note, my FCW is 100x rougher when it kicks on the emergency braking. These tires grip way better than the stock ones and the system has no idea how to compensate.
