Re: Best Tire for the Asphalt Loving Jeep

I think you have two things going on here, first they are not balanced properly at no speed should the seat beside you be shaking. 2nd they are a little stiffer tire which normally is not something you would notice that much if you did not have this shaking problem which is making a little stiffer tire more apparent. Id be prepared for most tires to not be as mushy as the forteras are they are a very soft mushy tire, that handle like crap but no tire should shake. Im telling you those people don't know how to use that road force balancer they don't know what they are doing. There is no way 8 tires are bad and there is no way they are getting road force numbers of 5-8 and you are have all this shaking this bad assuming rims are straight. Id love to have road force numbers of 5-8, non of mine were that low on my Michelins and mine are smooth as glass.
Premier is a good tire also it is the replacement for the Michelin Latitude Tour HP. Its more of an on road cruiser and I think they tout good wet traction with it. Little bit more of an on road flair, there are some post on here of some folks that have them.

Re: Best Tire for the Asphalt Loving Jeep

Well, after 4 1/2 years it was time to replace the stock Forterras. I have been going back and forth between Michelins, Coopers and few others for almost a year now. A leak in one of my tires finally motivated me to finally make a decision. So I decided to go with Defender LTX M/S 275/55R20 mostly due to customer ratings. I just had these installed yesterday so I don't have many miles on them. But just in the short drive home I am very pleased with them (so far). They are extremely smooth and quiet and maybe just slightly softer ride than the Goodyears. I hit every dip and bump more aggressively on the way home to see how handle. Definitely smoother and less jarring than the Forterras. This also might be due to fact that the Defenders are taller and thus more sidewall as well as I ran the Goodyears at 40psi and Michelins are currently 36psi. More miles behind the wheel will give me a better feel but for now I am very pleased. Also, the larger size looks so much better. For comparisons sake, I drive a stock Limited 4x4 Tow Package V8.

Re: Best Tire for the Asphalt Loving Jeep

I submitted a claim with Michellin about the tires. They stated that they will swap out my Defenders for the Premiers in the same 265/50/20 spec.

I am now waiting to hear back from my dealership about the next steps and if they are going to try and charge me for installation/roadforce balancing/etc.

Re: Best Tire for the Asphalt Loving Jeep

Dealership just called. My new Michellin Premier LTX have arrived.

Theyre pushing saying that it has to be installed within 24 hours. I told them I can come in on Monday and considering this is my 5th dealership visit in 2 weeks, they better not give me a hassle about it.

Either way, once theyre installed I am going to see how it rides. If it is still having issues then I am going to a different jeep dealership and getting a second opinion. So will either have my answer Friday or Monday. Until that time, the stiff ride continues.

And the saga continues. We are all dying to find out how it ends. Please get to the dealer as soon as you can so you can report back to us. I should imagine that someone at the dealership or FCA would be able to find out just exactly what is going on with your Jeep. If its the suspension, the window motors or the cruise control, there has to be an explanation. I have been spending far too much time following this thread and I want a resolution NOW!!!

Re: Best Tire for the Asphalt Loving Jeep

I really do appreciate everyones input and thoughts into what has to be the most complicated tire purchase of all time.

I will be sure to keep this thread updated as soon as the new wheels get put on. HOPEFULLY it solves the problem. Considering the vehicle has 7600 miles and had 0 issues when I had the Forteras, im assuming the culprit is the rubber.

Re: Best Tire for the Asphalt Loving Jeep

While you're waiting for them to be installed, you should take a new 2016 overland or summit for a test drive to see if it feels different.

Re: Best Tire for the Asphalt Loving Jeep

I tried that last time I was at the dealership. The salesguy was showing me a '16 High Altitude. I had to nix the idea before we even left the lot because I couldnt listen to his terrible sales pitch nor did I feel like pretending that I didnt know more about the vehicle than he did.

I might go to a salesperson next time Im there and be completely upfront with them. I dont want to buy, I will not buy, I purely just want to drive it for comparisons sake

Best Tire for the Asphalt Loving Jeep

Looks like the Forteras aren't that bad after all lmao maybe the funky suspension on the jeep isn't made to have a quality 'on-road' tire on it. Which kinda sucks cuz honestly my GC is a mall queen.

Re: Best Tire for the Asphalt Loving Jeep

I will absolutely confirm that there is a very different feel between the Forteras and many other tires. When my Forteras were end-of-life (at about 40K with 6/32), I put in the Nitto NT421Q tires that I had been interested in for some time. I absolutely felt the bumps and other things a lot more due to the stiffer sidewalls of the Nittos but the smooth pavement handling was also noticeably stickier. I honestly didn't have any issues or complaints with the Forteras that came on my vehicle. They performed well and were comfortable. When these Nittos are done, I'm not sure I'll buy them again at this point, however. There are other options to explore and more available as time passes.
