BF Goodrich Rugged Terrain T/A tires

Anyone have any experience with this new BFG tire? They are stated to be a blend between all-season and all-terrain tires, with the appearance and all-weather ability of an AT and the on-road performance of an all-season tire. They look good, and the few reviews to date seem to be very favorable.

That's quite a claim to be best in both worlds, but I do like the look of the tread:

Re: BF Goodrich Rugged Terrain T/A tires

Cherodude,
Your thumbnail shows the tread of a BFG Rugged Trail tire. The Rugged Terrain is a different tire with a very different tread pattern.

While reviews have been favorable, I can find no mention of its performance in wintry conditions, which is a concern for me. I think it was just introduced in May this year, so it has yet to show up on any surveys, like those done by Tire Rack.

In that case the seller misidentified the tire. Sorry about that.

Can you post a real picture of the tread?

Re: BF Goodrich Rugged Terrain T/A tires

Now that I see the correct tread, I can see why the concern about snow performance. Hard to predict how well that will snow-clear. It would be good to see some survey results before buying.

Re: BF Goodrich Rugged Terrain T/A tires

I had these tires on an 07 GMC Sierra Crew Cab. For an A/T tire these puppies ride awesome and are super quiet! I never had a chance to take them off road.

You probably had the Rugged Trails. The Rugged Terrains just came out in May this year.

Correct the first pic is the rugged trail, horrible tire. The new rugged terrain is very similar to a destination at firestone.

No, I actually had the Rugged Terrains. They had just come out when I got them. It seemed to be a great tire I just didnt have the chance to put many miles on them. Put them on the truck and then found out it was burning oil and got rid of it.

Here ya go...

Re: BF Goodrich Rugged Terrain T/A tires

I had these tires on my 2005 4Runner.

They looked and lasted great. Offroad performance was very good (dirt & mud). Onroad I'd rate them as above average. They were a bit noisy (expected) but what I didn't love was their handling in wet conditions. It was fairly easy to break traction with them with any water on the road.

Overall I'd rate them about 85 out of a possible 100.

Re: BF Goodrich Rugged Terrain T/A tires

I recently had Rugged Terrains installed on my Jeep. p265/60/18. I like the look and the ride is fairly smooth. I get a slight vibration in the steering wheel with them. Road noise is high, though. They claim to be quiet and all the reviews I read before buying them said they were quiet, but they're just about as loud as the AT/MT hybrid tires* I have on my Tacoma, and the Tacoma doesn't benefit from the cabin noise insulation the WK2 has.

The Rugged Terrains are fairly quiet below 20mph, then the noise ramps up as you go faster. Between 45 and 62 mph they sing in a loud drone that's hard to ignore. Over 62 they become fairly quiet again.

If I were cross-shopping the Rugged Terrain and the Firestone Destination A/T, I'd go with the firestone even though it's more expensive. I've run the firestones before and they're as quiet as a highway tire. I regret buying the BFGs because of the road noise.

* The tacoma has Cooper Discoverer S/T's:
