Coil suspension vs Air

Today I drove around in a Laredo and I swear that thing had a softer ride than my overland. Some of this could be because of the 18 inch wheels vs 20. It just drove completely different. It felt lighter also could be difference in engine weight 6 vs 8. It seems to me the air suspension just rides different under certain conditions. Like when I first drive for the day it seems stiffer and during the summer when it was real hot it seemed stiffer at times. Just wondering what others thought.

There are a lot of variables that come in to play (you listed them, so you know), so you can't make a solid comparison.

I think the technology behind the Quadra Lift is amazing, but I would have a hard time choosing between the regular suspension and the QL if I were making a purchase. As much as the novelty behind the QL draws me to it, I then think about the possibilities of things going wrong and then the fact that you can no alter it at all, keep me from wanting it. I do think the engineering behind it is quite remarkable though.

Yeah, the air suspension option for me was a " what the heck, I don't care, I gotta have it " option. the sensible side of me likes the known reliability of the coil spring set up though. But 10k miles and no problems............so far.........

I've notice my suspension softened up some now. But was thinking this is just break in and should be expected. I think it rides great now. it's very smooth. And the truck tracks perfectly. At 65 the truck stays dead center of lane for me.

The softer feel in the Lerado may have been low tire pressure, or softer side wall tires too. It very well could also be a softer set up.

my last air suspension vehicle (2004 audi allroad) was great, but needed a few air shock replacements during its 100k mile life with me. i decided early on during my jeep search to stay away from air suspension this time around. cool feature if you routinely need the clearance, but i'm going to be fine with the factory steel spring clearance. in my opinion the vehicle lowering itself on the highway is the best perk, if had to pick one.

I think we are conditioned to watch for QL problems and would notice changes that would otherwise go unnoticed. Conventional suspension changes as the temperature changes tire pressure and shock characteristics. Shocks wear over time. You just are not attuned to the changes.

The conventional and air suspensions ride near the same, I think (everything else equal) the air will soak up small bumps/cracks a little better so it may feel smoother to some. The air may handle/adjust to heavy loads better.

Wish they would give you the option for coils on a new Overland. I would like to run larger tires than is possible with the air suspension. Air is fine for a street truck however.

I spent 10 months in the saddle on a coil setup and have now been on air for 1 month. I find that the air suspension feels more cusioned but at the same time more planted on the road than the coil setup did. I suppose this could also be in part the difference between QT2 vs QD2.

Also with the coils I noticed that when you went over speed bumps etc you could almost feel the recoil as the spring and shock pushed the wheel back down towards the road with an empty thud type noise. I no longer get this noise on the air ride.

I like the adjustability of the Quadra Lift, I like the Sport mode.
When a line blows off, you get a low rider effect although the ride is harsh.

I agree that it has a more planted feeling it just seems a little stiffer. This could be because I have the 20" wheels now.
