Confirmation of Clunk

My MIL light came on so I had to visit the dealer. I took the opportunity to test drive another GC with Quadralift.
Took the salesperson across the street to where the speed bumps live.
At about 3mph I watched his eyes go wide as the suspension dropped out.
Did it a few more times to make sure.
Put it in Off-road 1 and it did it then too, just not as bad.
We came back and his words to the sales manager were "that's scary".
So at least I know that, if anything, mines not as bad as some others.
Sales manager said he would be talking to the Chrysler rep about it. I'm not holding my breath.

Re: Confirmation of Clunk

It usually presents itself in OR1 and gets drastic in OR2.

What year GC are you driving?

2015. 2400 miles. Really like it, other than that.

Re: Confirmation of Clunk

Is this a "thing?" First post BTW... recently got a '14 Overland and put it in OR2 for the first time just for kicks to go through some temporary gravel driveways in a construction zone. Got to a speedbump and at 5mph I almost shit myself due to the thud. What do I need to know? Thanks!!!

Re: Confirmation of Clunk

Jeep lovers seem to think that it is acceptable. I didn't think to search for "clunking sounds" prior to pulling a $50,000. Trigger so I'm stuck with it. Yes, you'll rarely hear it if you stay in normal drive mode. If you search the reviews it is mentioned, often, but rarely do they elaborate on it. I'm hoping that somewhere down the line someone will come up with a fix for it. Just isn't right.

I agree.....just ain't right! FCA should not be putting vehicles for sale before someone puts them through their paces and finds out the MANY deficiencies that appear to be way too common.

I have a buddy with a new Ford explorer (has 6000km on it)....not an issue yet.....and I like it.

The only downside I see with the Explorer is that it does not have the 'hot chocolate anti-settling cup holders' as an option.

Re: Confirmation of Clunk

After owning a 2011 Overland for two years and going through 3-4 sets of rear shocks, I finally got rid of it for a 2014 Limited without QudraLift.

It was great for a while, but eventually the load leveling rear shocks started clunking similar to the QL did. I finally got so angry that I recently replaced the ENTIRE suspension with the Old Man Emu suspension system.

I have about 1500 miles on the new setup and I can honestly say THIS is how the GC suspension should feel from then factory. It's smooth on the highway and beefy and gobbles up terrain off road.

Re: Confirmation of Clunk

Acceptable or not, it's "normal" behavior when there is so little suspension travel left as you raise it up high since it doesn't take much to hit the stops. (hence, the clunk)

Re: Confirmation of Clunk

That must be a seriously steep speed bump to make the clunk at 3mph. You gotta drop a bunch of travel very quick to make the noise. I hit speed bumps around 15-19mph by my house but they're the large gradual kind.

Not saying I'm happy about the design, I wish it never clunked.

The only use for a blue oval is as a toilet seat.

Does your salesperson also drive a 14+ JGC? You may want to take the service manager next time. Many jeeps have the clunk but it's more suspension stop/dampening sound than anything to be extremely worried about. I have the clunk and occasional quick rattle. Not sure why your salesperson is saying it "is scary". Maybe they want to get you into something else?

Was the Mopar cool-aid tasty?

We have Ford trucks at work.......100,000+ kms.....driven hard....really borderline abuse......and they can run down the highway steering straight and not shaking.

Do you think I should give Jeep a THIRD attempt to supply me with a high end vehicle that drives as well as a $30,000 beat bare-bones Ford p/u?
