Disappointed in Latitude X-Ice Xi2

Here is some back gound on me: I live in the suburbs of Toronto, with regular drives to cottage country in summer and winter. I have been running winter tires on all my vehicles for too many years to count. I am a huge fan of running winter tires and have had great success with Michelin winter tires.

I have a 2012 JGC Limited that I bought new in the fall of 2012 and have been running with Michelin Latitude X-Ice Xi2 245/70R17. I am largely disappointed in the winter performance of these tires.

My vehicle has approximately 18,000 miles on the winters, with a current tread depth of 9/32. New is 11/32. These winter tires are quiet, smooth and wear like iron. However, they have the least amount of winter traction that I have experienced in modern times. It is ironic that this Jeep GC is my first all wheel drive vehicle, and I feel less secure than in my prior front wheel drive vehicles.

Note that the Latitude X-Ice Xi2 are still far better in snow/ice than the stock Latitude Tour all seasons. I am still a proponent of winters, but I am disappointed with this set. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Any thoughts?

Thank you,
Oscar

Never have run a set of Latitude X-ice winter tires, but I can say if your disappointed with them you should check out the Nokian line of winter tires. I've run several sets of them and can recommend them as the best winter tires I've ever owed. Lots of people on this forum run them, from A/T, All-Season, to all out Studded winter tires all with snowflak on the Mountain winter service ratings. Check out the many threads on winter tires for more info.

Oscar, Well I might get kicked off the site, but my Honda Cross Tour (AWD w Blizzaks) out handled the Buffalo winter. I bought a Grand Cherokee (limited), and mounted it up w Blizzaks (these are amazing tires - by the way), but it's the worse winter experience I've had in a decade of Hondas. . . I still enjoy the Jeep, but I keep waiting for someone to tell me why it would handle worse than a Honda. So - I'm not (yet) convinced that your tires are the problem.

I did have some one explain to me that the Jeeps are a rear wheel drive vehicle with front wheel assist. My AWD Hondas were front wheel drive w rear wheel assist. This made sense to me - on why I feel a difference between the 2 platforms . . . .

Odd because I run 285/50R20 Blizzak DM-V1's on my QT1 Grand Cherokee and I've made it through several snow storms with no issues.
We also run the same model Blizzak's on our Q5 and that too has had no issues.

Re: Disappointed in Latitude X-Ice Xi2

Additional information: With these Latitude X-Ice Xi2 I have driven through some really deep snow, even to the point of dragging the undercarriage, with little difficulty. Forward progress can be made with all wheel drive in most conditions. However, stopping and turning is far from ideal. The steering feel when driving at a steady speed feels terrible in some conditions.

My other vehicle is a 3 series BMW, with winters of course, Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3, which are getting somewhat worn, being down to 7.5/32. Something is wrong when my BMW stops better, turns better and has better feel than my Jeep in very slippery conditions. Naturally, my BMW cannot accelerate well.

Re: Disappointed in Latitude X-Ice Xi2

How much does you Jeep weigh? how about your BMW? Where's the center of gravity of your BMW? Jeep?

The Jeep is just fine in snow, but it's HEAVY with a relatively high center of gravity. Even Jeep can't overcome physics. Given identical tires in identical conditions, the BMW SHOULD stop and turn better than the GC. Same with the Honda. The best 4WD system in the world doesn't do a thing for stopping or turning in slick conditions.

I agree with all of your points. I have been stating the same to others for many years.

However, why do my prior vehicles, such as numerous Dodge Grand Caravans, and Dodge Journeys, which are perhaps within 10% of the weight of our JGC, brake and turn better?
