Does bigger treads = more rock chips

Currently on 2014 Overland I have 265/50/20 Goodyear Fortera's and I am about to pull trigger on Nitto Terra Grappler G2 in 275/55/20's.

Since Nitto's have wider treads and I assume throw more and larger stones, plus it being a wider tire overall, will paint chips become an issue?

I don't like mud flaps on a jeep but do want to protect paint if can.

Re: Does bigger treads = more rock chips

Hi 68camaro,
I have a 2013 GC Overland and am about ready to do the same thing. If you are going slow, not many rocks will throw, they wait till you get off the gravel and onto why (My truck has big off road tires and seems to work that way). I have mud flaps on jeep and on my truck and its paint seems fine. gl.

Re: Does bigger treads = more rock chips

Tires vary, although the point about larger tread voids producing larger rock dings is very likely correct.

The Michelin MS/2 and AT/2 both seem able to leap across freeway lanes to pick up even the slightest amount of pebbles available, and hang onto them tightly until your vehicle is going fast enough to toss them against your paint or whatever.

Re: Does bigger treads = more rock chips

I went from milder tread AT tires (with about 12" tread depth) to much more aggressive tread on an MT (with 18" depth) and have way fewer rocks getting thrown than I did before with the AT tires.

The AT depth just didn't hold the rocks and would kick them out. The MTs hold onto them and I just pick them out when I'm at a stop.

Greetings,

I agree with you. I also hate the mud flaps for the snow. So, to me running with AT tires is a bit of a comprise.

Best for now.
