ERS question

Is there a difference in using 5 in ERS versus D on a hemi?

Could be wrong but I think it locks out going into ECO mode and MDS. Maybe someone else knows for sure.

x2

I notice nothing other than the "ECO" light not coming on. Everything else seems the same.

He is referring to Electronic Range Selection...or moving the shifter to the left to go from D to 5 or any other gear.

Ha... not gonna lie, I actually had to look it up. I just assumed he was referring to the shifter.

Re: ERS question

I've found the manual control over the Jeep transmission so inadequate its not even worth using. In other 'tiptronic' cars i've driven, user input trumps the car's almost to the point of bogging down. The jeep seems to do whatever it wants - almost like taking a "suggestion" from the driver. Sometimes, on long, straight roads (travel of about 40mph), I would shift into the highest gear in a m/t car. The jeep seems to want to stay in 4, even if i click the lever over for 5. Oh well.

Re: ERS question

From page 348 of the manual:

"ERS 5 (Overdrive) is the same as the normal 4th gear."

In 'D', the transmission will use the normal 5th gear. In '5', it won't. Yeah, that's a little counter-intuitive.

Re: ERS question

While the WK2 manual shift feature isn't as functional as Triptronic as 1200RP-T states, it does limit the max gear range and is highly useful for downshifting. We use it all the time while descending in the mountains and when entering turns for both spirited and normal driving.

It also will disengage MDS when you drop out of D into 5.

Re: ERS question

Tow haul mode actually has good shifting strategy for winding roads, uphill/downhills etc. as it holds each gear longer, and downshifts quickly under braking to get you in a good gear for pulling off the corner.

I agree, tow/haul mode, when used with ERS made our vacation trip (2500 miles pulling 5000 lbs) a lot nicer than leaving it in D. Being able to keep the vehicle in the meet of the powerband made going through some of the 4% and 5% grades a piece of cake AND kept the trans temps down as well.

One thing to remember, this isn't a "tiptronic" or auto/manual. It's a multispeed automatic where you can tell the trans what the HIGHEST gear you want it to select is. It is not intended to be used to select the specific gear you want.
