I decided to replace my worn factory latitude Tires that have 35,000 mi on them. I Have a 2012 Overland with off Road package with 18'' Polished coated Wheels. Take my jeep to Firestone dealer to get 4 destination AT tires i bought from them mounted on Factory 18'' wheels. Show the rep no scratches no curb rash before they start work. Long story short they scratched all 4 wheels from tire mounting machine. They gave me $200.00 each wheel to reconditioned wheels from a shop i picked that does this type of repairs. They take tires off wheels and dip strip sand polish and clear coat wheels . I never used this shop but over 50 - 5 star reviews. He has to keep my jeep for 4 days to do the job no problem i have a car i can use . Shop will drop me home and pick me up when finished .Should i let him do the Factory reconditioned job or buy new aftermarket wheels and get them mounted again ? What would you do ?
That's kind of a tossup many reconditioning places are exceptionally good at their job, the vast majority think they are exceptionally good at their job. Aftermarket wheels have similar chances. I like the OE suppliers quality more than I care about the finish, so I'm aftermarket wheels have been known to have porosity or an uneven finish to start with. Me I'd ask to see an example of the same finish I'm going to be receiving, and then cross my fingers. There are some good shops, not in south Florida though.
I think it would depend on a few factors. 1. How badly do you want new wheels over the old wheels? 2. Do you want to spend the extra that new wheels would cost? 3. Do you know someone dependable who can move the tires over to your new wheels without scratching the new wheels up?
One of the Challenger owners in my area works at a Firestone and offered to install my new wheels knowing I was looking for a shop that wouldn't screw it up. I gave him a tip of a 12 pack I left in his trunk for the help.
I see you live in NJ? I would be tempted to put some winter tires on the scratched wheels and put the nice wheels of your choice on the fair season set.
The Firestone Destination AT's are pretty good in winter & Summer for Driving in NJ . That's why i got the AT's with 18'' wheels. When i bought my Jeep with ORP option i offered to pay for upgrade to AT tires NG. They only offered 18'' wheels & latitude tires . Wish i had the Moe for running dedicated summer and winter sets!
I think I've seen a thread somewhere on this forum where those wheels had been installed...they look good. $265 for an 18x8 wheel seems a bit steep though.
