Search on 285/50 and you should fine some pics as there are plenty of both 295/45 and 285/50. I am still stock but decided on 285/50 on 9 inch wide rims. It is more of a personal thing as to which you like.
I think I have found an shortcoming in the "rimsntires" calculation tool.
As far as I can tell what the tool does is correct but it does not adjust the tire section width based on different wheel rim widths. I think it uses the recommended mid-width rim and says with that tire section width no matter the rim width.
So for instance you note that 285/50-20 tires have a recommended rim widths from 8.0 to 10.0 inches on most of the tire manufacture web sites. The tool show 8.5 to 10.5 which is half an inch wider (close). But the section width increases and decreases by 0.2 inches for each 1/2 inch wider or narrower rim from the dimensions based on the "recommended rim width".
This will effect the section width number by these small amounts. One half the increase or decrease in section width per side of the tire for suspension and fender clearance.
Try it - use the 285/50-20 on a 8.0 and a 10.0 rim and nothing changes.
