Flat tire, WTHeck?! I am getting to old.....

I came home this weekend and found a large screw in my tire. Damn thing leaked like a shower head. Changed the tire to the spare and drove jeep to the tire shop.

Sorry, it can not be fixed. Because the screw is outside of the "repair" area, we can only sell you a new tire.

What! The tire has only 1,000 miles miles on it. It is brand new!

I am sorry sir, but the screw is to close to the sidewall, we can only sell you a new tire for only $260 (including mounting, yea?).

Damn it.

So, I went to the dealer where I bought my 4 week old 2015 GC from and got the same story. Can not fix, I must buy a new replacement tire. WTF! The screw is in the thick part of the tread, not in the sidewall. They say it is to close to the sidewall and will not fix it, they will only sell a replacement. When I was younger, garages had no problem plugging or patching these things. I had it done all the time. When did this start happening, it is a waste of a brand new tire!

Been told this by a dealer before. Went to an independent tire shop and it was repaired without question. Is the dealership being over-careful or greedy? Given my experience it was greed in my situation. Clearly not in the sidewall area. Your situation may be different.

Re: Flat tire, WTF! I am getting to old.....

I had the same happen. The screw was outside of the steel belts under the thread. Reputable tire shops will not repair this because the sidewalls tend to flex more, and the patch will not last.

I took the tire to the el-cheapo place down the street and they put a plug in it, but they too said that they can't guarantee it will hold. I just wanted it to last a little longer till when I replaced all 4 tires.

To OP, I hear your pain, especially when it's only a 1,000 miles new. At least if you replace it now, the tires will be more evenly matched in terms of treadwear.

Sorry re-read the original. I would say that everyone is more cautious due to liability with fixing things, especially tires...
I would still find a tire shop that will patch it internally...

You could fix it yourself for less than six bucks: http://www.amazon.com/Victor-22-5-00...tire+patch+kit

When you (and me) were younger they were not using steel belted radials!

I still remember bias ply on my first car. A VW Bug, I bought for $300. It rode like tank!

I also, bought another Bug for a case of beer and in a single day changed the motor with a buddy for a large pizza.

I also bought a VW type 3 for $50. I repainted it using 6 spray cans of flat black paint in my back yard.

Back then I could actually work on the car!

Spray paint! You went first class. My 3rd hand 1963 International Scout which I bought in 1970 was painted with a brush (and tan paint)!

The good new is that OEM tires are pretty inexpensive, less than $150 each or so. I would just take your medicine and forget about it.
