I agree 100%. It isn't like they didn't have room to deepen the tire well back there. Have you looked under the rear? huge "clear" space to have made the well deep enough for a true "full size" spare, preferably with a matching wheel, at least on limited and overland models.

Cost cutting most likely. The spare is smaller, a cheaper brand name, and on a plain steel wheel. It really does kind of irritate you once you find out.

Answering my own question: car's computer (TPM module) knows threshold numbers. It is programmed at the factory. This info is from the link Milous posted above
