Re: Goodyear Silent Armour

One reason I'm considering the Mich LTX MS/2 here in CO is that I only do light off roading and the tests indicate this tire is very good in the snow, particularly harder pack which we have a lot of on the highways. It is M/S rated but without the snow flake rating - and I get to keep the manners of a highway tire with the benefits of aggressive all season. I have 10K so far on my Latitude Tours. Really no problem with them in the summer and light off roading but not great reports for winter. Still open to suggestions but I can get the LTXs at my local Costco who also do free rotation and balancing. Some of you and on other sites have spoken highly of this tire for winter use. May stick with the Latitudes going into winter to see if I can get by till next season.

Any updates on the 275 55 20 GY's? I am looking at these as well.

I have the silent armors on my 2010 GC. Had them put on before I left the dealer. I have over 50K on them and they are very excellent all around tire, rain snow offroad mud. I should be able to get another 25 or 30K on them for sure before I trade the truck in for a 2014 CRD.

Re: Goodyear Silent Armour

To those of you that have upgraded to Silent Armors from stock tires, have you observed any drop in MPG? I need to get rid of the Forteras on my Laredo and I'm wondering if mileage will be affected.

I had the OEM Forteras and upgraded to Silent Armors. With the Forteras I would get an average of 20 MPG with mostly city driving and some highway. Now my average is 19. So really not a big deal at all.
Highway mileage is affected tho. With the Forteras I could get 24 MPG on the highway now I get 22-23.
The Silent Armors are awesome when it comes to off roading so for me it makes up for the minuscule MPG drop.

That's not too bad at all. The Forteras are not worth the extra MPG. Thanks!

I upgraded my 18s from Michelin Latitudes to GYSA back in April, about 10,000 miles ago. I calculate mileage by hand for every tankful and there is no discernible difference that I can say is due to the tire change. I run my tires at 36 psi (before and after).

Go for it!

Greetings,

I do not have them on my JGC, but a buddy of mine in upstate NY has them on his 3.6 V6 and he averages 21.5 - 23 mpg with QL set to sport on flat to small inclines doing 70 - 75 mph on the highway. Auto he gets a little less and loves them. With my BFG Rugged Terrain T/A I am getting .5 higher which IMO is the same.

In any event, an on/off all terrain you will lose something. All I know is that I am getting much better mpg then when I had the Nissan Pathfinder.

Hope this helps, best for now.

Cool thanks for the responses. Out of curiosity, how do you like your Rugged Terrains? They seem like a decent compromise of a tire, but I really like the look and capability of the Silent Armors. Do you do any off-roading or snow driving? Thanks.

Greetings,

I have done light off-road on them with no problem. Others have reported sometimes in medium to heavy mud was a problem. In wet conditions, I love them and in dry conditions excellent tractions.

BFG Rugged Terrain T/A

However, since I got the BFG back in June of 2011, I have yet to travel in any snow. I seem to have kept missing it in my area and for other reasons, I never made up to ski country in the northeast. I looking forward to see how the snow and the BFG Rugged Terrains mate. If I do not like them in the snow, I will look into a dedicated snow tire. Either Goodyear or Nokian are my picks for now.

I have heard many good results with Silent Armors. Also Nokian has a new AT tire that is getting a lot of talk:

Nokian Rotiiva AT

Best for now.
