Grand Cherokee Recall - Brake Booster

Just saw this on CNN Money.

"Chrysler will recall nearly 870,000 SUVs worldwide to fix a problem with the brake system, the company said Wednesday.

The recall affects certain Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos from model years 2011-2014. An estimated 644,354 of the recalled SUVs are in the U.S."

"The automaker, owned by the recently renamed Italian company Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, will install a shield on the recalled vehicles that protects brake boosters from undue water corrosion. The problem can cause excessive brake-pedal firmness."

Has anyone heard from Chrysler / Jeep yet?

Tom

Re: Grand Cherokee Recall - Brake Booster

Since the recall was just announced, I suspect it will be some time before we receive notices.

Per the report, looks like we should start seeing these recall notices sometime in May.
Today's recall affects a total of 867,795 vehicles -- 644,354 registered in the U.S., 42,380 registered in Canada, 21,376 registered in Mexico, and an additional 159,685 elsewhere on the planet. Chrysler reports one accident related to the problem but no injuries.

NHTSA says that Chrysler will begin mailing recall notices to owners in May. At that time, owners will be able to take their vehicles to dealers, who will test the brake booster. If it can hold ample vacuum pressure, the dealer will install a water diverter shield on the booster, which should eliminate any potential problems. If, on the other hand, the booster fails the pressure test, it will be replaced.

Gee... and here I was worried about finding a large amount of road salt crusted in the exact same spot my ground strap attaches to the frame rail.

Still haven't figured out where the hell that came from.

That, bad grounds, appears to be a Jeep tradition. Sorta like old sports cars and Lucas. The very first year of the GC had them. If you coin op wash it well, then take it apart and clean everything, when you put it back together, a good spray down with Rustoleum undercoating seems enough to keep it away. Suspect Corning grease would as well... the rustoleum lasted almost 20 years. A surprising number of gremlins hang out near the jeep grounds.

Also received my notice. Don't want to take it in. I hate the dealer.
