I've got a 2014 Summit 4x4 with the Hemi. About six months ago, I started to notice a sporadic rumbing/grinding/vibration when driving the vehicle on smooth pavement. It's almost like a harmonic vibration/rumble. It comes and goes and it seems to happen on different pavements and at different speeds. The only thing I *think* is consistent is the engine RPM between 1400 RPM and 1700 RPM.
I've taken the vehicle to the dealer and of course they say they can't replicate the issue. I'm taking it back on Monday and I'm going to let them keep it for th week (I'm out of town for work so I won't need the vehicle).
Can any of you give me some advice on what might be causing this issue or where to point them?
Left, right, front, rear? Does turning the steering make a difference? Any difference when let off accelerator or accelerate again? How many miles on vehicle? Can you feel it or just hear it?
Should of been more clear I guess. Sounds like it's coming from the front of the vehicle. Steering does not affect it. However, pressing on or releasing the accelerator slightly does. Vehicle has about 42,000 miles on it. Yes I can feel it a bit, but it's not violent.
Dealership replaced (or said they did) a broken motor mount. However, the issue is not resolved. Guess I'll be going back to the dealer for the third time.
Did you find out what the noise was? My 2011 had a harmonic humming noise from the front end while at 55-65. I thought it may be a wheel bearing but in fact it was one of the tires. It had a bad belt and slowly got a little louder and louder as it wore.
I still haven't found out what the noise is. It may be tires. I'm going to try to take the vehicle back to Discount Tire where I got my Michelin's put on and have them take a look.
My '14 had a bad wheel bearing, but that's easy to diagnose since it is not part of the drive train. Just take the vehicle out of gear at 40 mph, with foot of the gas see how the noise changes as the vehicle slows.
Later the MDS got noise. That was one of the reasons for getting the Summit this time. The noise cancelling is supposed to hide the MDS noise.
Next time you are at the dealer, take the service rep. for a ride to demonstrate the issue. Much less chance for a, "can not replicate", excuse next time.
Hey there did you find out what the problem was? I have the exact problem grinding/rumbling whilst driving on different road surfaces, particularly smooth roads. Have jeep gc altitude 2015 @ 40k and had tire's changed by independent dealer when I bought the car mid 2016 @ 33k. It's driving me mad. Booked car in at local jeep dealer thinking it might be a bearing, but they say not. But to get an alignment done. We'll had that done and still had there. Just worried it's something in the drive train. Short of spending a fortune on new tire's, any suggestions?
I've been driving with the MDS system disabled (turning off the "Eco Mode" by pressing the button on the dash). I've noticed some improvement in the rumbing sound. Not sure if this is it 100% though. Still testing it. Anyone else try this to see if its the MDS system? I believe only the 5.7L HEMI has the MDS system.
Think I've narrowed the issue down to the MDS (multi-displacement system). When I turn it off (by pressing the ECO button on the dash), all the rumbling goes away. Now, is there a fix for it?
My 2011 3.6 made grinding rough sound for 3-5 seconds from the engine area while city driving, then today after starting. Almost like a bearing going. My vehicle is very well maintained 150k / 90k miles. Not a good feeling.
