Had to replace one tire (Cooper AT3), should I get another one?

Long story short, I got a flat and had to replace one my AT3 / 265-65-17 and had it mounted in the rear. The other three tires are 1 year old with heavy hwy driving. I would like to be able to rotate my tires again to get longer life, but I don't know if it's a good idea to put the new tire in the front paired with a 1 year old.

Buying another tire would be an additional $209 installed and I already have a full spare in that size (cheap brand).

What do you guys recommend? I asked a shop that does tire shaving but they said that big tire would ruin their blade. Should I take a chance and rotate it to the front?

Re: Had to replace one tire (Cooper AT3), should I get another one?

Shouldn't matter but it all depends on the tread life left on the other tires compared to new. With most of Jeeps drive system the problem is based on revolutions; if one tire is spinning slower than the others it could cause the T/C to heat up and at the least cause wear to the system. Tire dealer should be able to tell you.

Measure the thread depth and let us know the difference.

It won't matter which corner the tire is on regardless.

If you have the base QTI system it certainly won't matter as its completely open. Don't think that much will make any difference on a QTII system, but what is the tread depth difference? Don't think that much difference makes any difference to the traction control or ABS software.

Re: Had to replace one tire (Cooper AT3), should I get another one?

I just measured with a coin and the difference is less than 3 cm. Old one is by the quarter's nose and the new one just a few cm deeper. I do have QT1. I will move them to the front and watch for any vibrations, etc.

Thanks a lot guys!

No -- use a tire tread depth gauge. They cost about $3 at an auto parts store. 3 cm is A LOT. You for sure don't want to shave down a brand new tire.

Tire shop said the AT3 would ruin their blade if they tried to shave it. I will get the depth gauge asap. I guess I will buy another one and pair it with the new one if the tread difference is too much.

Re: Had to replace one tire (Cooper AT3), should I get another one?

3 cm is 1.2 inches
3 mm is .126 inches in radius or about 1/4 inches in diameter smaller. AT3 / 265-65-17 are 30.5 inches in diameter when new. so your new tire is 0.8 % larger. In one mile that tire will revolve about 5 times less than the worn tires.

Unless I was running 4Low lock on asphalt, I would not worry about it... but double check those measurements. What you need is a comparison of tire diameter, tread depth is a way to back into it. A new tires tread depth is typically ~ 1/2 inch (~15mm) although I think the AT3s are 16.2mm which is closer to 0.6 inches..

Re: Had to replace one tire (Cooper AT3), should I get another one?

No way the depth was 3 cm more or less. Its not that deep new. That was my point above. Use a real gauge, and measure all 4. If you bought the new tire at a reputable shop, they should have said something if it were a concern. Certainly they would want to sell you another tire if it were necessary. They will also measure them for you.

Re: Had to replace one tire (Cooper AT3), should I get another one? (updated)

Ok guys... ran to Pep Boys and here are the measurements. The sad thing is I still don't know if I need a new tire or not. So I'm counting on you boys. :-)

Old Tire 8mm, 10 32nds
New Tire - 12mm, 13 32nds

I think that's a difference of 4-3 which does sound like a lot. However when I convert that difference to centimeters to have a better perspective, it translates to 0.409375.

Not sure if it matters, but I have QT1
