Harmonic like feel on the road

urious - I replaced the Goodyears on my 2015 Summit. I've mentioned in another post the nighmare I had with Michelins. I ended up with the Perelli Scorpion Verdes. These are the same tires that come on the 2016 Summits. Seems to be a great tire but here's my questions:

Anyone out there have a 2016 Summit with the Perelli's? If so how is the feel / feedback in the steering wheel when traveling over grooved freeways? I get this feedback very slight vibration up into the steering wheel from time to time depending on how rough the freeway is and or if the freeway has the cut grooves in the cement. Anyone else experiencing this?

The Goodyears never had this issue but were terrible in the snow. Could this be a rim issue? Are the sidewalls on the Goodyears softer and thus more forgiving? I'm ready to switch back to Goodyears and eat the cost of the Perelli's. Next I'm going to try and rotate front to back to see if there is a difference.

The tires were road force balanced at Americas Tire..... lastly they do seem to ride with a firm sort of feel.

Any ideas?

Re: Harmonic like feel on the road

It doesn't surprise me that you'd feel that more with the Pirelli's (more of a performance tire) than with the Goodyears.

Grooved concrete is always going to transmit some sensation through the steering wheel. Your tire type and tread pattern will have a lot to do with how much of that you'll feel. So will your wheel diameter... 20's don't have a lot of sidewall height, so that adds to the effect... but it's not the cause as much as the tire design.

Other than on this stretch of freeway, how do the tires feel to you?

Re: Harmonic like feel on the road

I have been through the mill on the tires also. The goodyear forteras are a very soft tire which is one reason they handle badly, but the only good thing about them was they did soak up bumps fairly well. most other tires in our stock size seem to be a little firmer. feed back into the steering wheel only when going over bumps is just the nature of the suspension. constant vibration at highway speeds is not normal and likely either a tire balance issue or possibly a bent rim. I hated the forteras but if you are ok with the bad handling mushy bouncing ride they do soak bumps fairly well. I would never put those things back on my jeep, I'm currently on the latitude tour HPs and will be going to the defender ltx m/s when these are worn out.

Just make sure you don't have your pressure to high on your Pirellis it should be 36 cold all the way around on the 20s

I sometimes feel a similar effect on grooved concrete with my Nittos...nature of the beast. I felt it less on the original Forteras, but they were more like marshmallows compared to my current tires.

Great feedback - I forgot to mention there were no vibrations once Americas Tire got them balanced right. Just the ocassional harmonics. I would agree the Goodyears are mushy and handle bad, also pretty bad in the snow which is why I swapped them - The Perellis corner great and they are standard on the 2016 Summit.

Thanks for the input.

I swapped out my forteras at 2000 miles and got Cooper AT3 in 275/55/20. They felt great until I went on the interstate on a 4 hour drive and vibrated so long that it made my hands hurt. It gave kind of an unstable feeling even though it still drove well. I'll have to get them road force balanced and see if that helps.

Have you had any luck with correcting the vibration issue? I'm currently at America's Tire now (2nd time today) to have them rebalance my newly bought BFG KO2s. My steering abnormally vibrates constantly when I drive over 50mph.

Not yet, it will probably be a couple weeks. My next 2 weeks I work 6am-5pm so the tire shop won't be open for me to bring them by. I only drive my jeep on the weekends so it's not too bad for me.
