Help me decide on a tire

2014 White Altitude here. I am keeping my stock 20" black wheels on it. I have 1.25" Bora spacers on the way. I think the largest I can go without rubbing, lift, or leveling kit is 275/55/20, so I'm going to stick with that for now. I thought I was sold on the Nitto Terra Grapplers until I spoke with a guy from Discount Tire today and he's making me second guess myself. Saying that the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac's are a more popular AT tire that isn't much more. I like the aggressive look, and a tire with great capability, but also don't want a super noisy tire.

I do most of my driving on street, but would like to start visiting some light trails. I live in MN, so they have to be good in snow. I am also looking to have these year round. I've narrowed it down to 3 tires.

Please give me some feedback on these tires and help me decide. Thanks.

Re: Help me decide on a tire

You also have the 285/50/20 option that I have on my Altitude.
Out of the choices you have I say Duratrac.
I've heard nothing but good things from 2 coworkers. One with a WK2 and the other a JKU.

Re: Help me decide on a tire

I voted for the Nitto Terras simply because from what I can gather they are the thinest of the group and with that tire size and no lift, level, etc every 1/10" will mean something. Personally I think if your going to do any off-roading the tire size is too tight without any suspension mods. I've been debating this forever do I stick with my 20" and go to the 275s or do I just get a set of 18" when I want to go on the adventure side. Now I'm leaning toward the 265/65/18 with the front level to give me the most bank for my buck.

I did forget to mention that option. I would prefer a little more sidewall. Trying to get as much tire in the wheel well as possible with what i have right now.

Thanks for the feedback.

Re: Help me decide on a tire

Greetings,

Here is some food for thought:

BFG All-Terrain T/A KO2

I would diffidently check out those Nitto Eco tires.

As for tire size, if you are going for new rims also, then IMHO, I would look at an 18 inch tire. Better clearance unless you make mods to the suspension as pointed out by member AQUAFORSTER. And 18's are better in deep powder.

In addition, since you want to keep these tires on all year round, mind you if do decide to go for the stud option on the GY Duratrac, it is only for the LT sizes and the Nitto Eco is across the line. Once you stud a tire, it is a PITA to pull them out and re stud for the next season. Regardless which tire you get, in this classification, all AT tires will have some sort of noise level.

Best for now.

Thanks for the feedback. This is my first Jeep, and a lease, as I didn't want to commit if I didn't end up liking it after 3 years. So far I'm loving it. That being said, I don't want to go too heavy on expensive mods.

I would only get new wheels if I could sell the current ones, OR I have considered purchasing some used 18" sahara wheels. I have found some fairly cheap locally. Plastidip them black, then put some meatier tires on them.

I don't mean to change the topic on my own thread, but if i could get a 285/60or65/18 on those sahara 18x7.5 wheels, I'd consider pulling the trigger on something like that. Especially with having that extra room from the 1.25" Bora spacers.

Rubicon wheels would be ideal, but not looking to spend that much, and I think I don't want to go smaller than 18" wheel.

If I do end up buying the jeep at the end of lease, which right now is looking pretty promising, then at that time I'd put a RRO lift with other mods on.

Thanks again.

Re: Help me decide on a tire

Greetings,

No problem.

Just remember to get tires that best suites your needs in all seasons if you are not going for a dedicated winter tire.

Best for now.

Re: Help me decide on a tire

I'd say you got some really good advise from 1sJeepGC.

For the record I'm 10 months into a 39 month lease and at first I was kinda thinking like you about not putting too much into it or doing to many mods, but the RRO Level is not expensive and can be undone and if I choose to get a second set of 18" those are sellable or can probably be used in my next GC (this is my third one). Whether I keep it or not will depend on the deal as well as what they do to the 2017 which is when my lease one end.

One thing I will definitely not do is put a tire on that I have to worry about rubbing if I choose to go over a curb or do some off-roading, but that's me, many other's are never going off road so it's probably not an issue for them.

Re: Help me decide on a tire

Thanks very much for everyone's feedback. It got me thinking about getting a set of 18" pro comp 7036 with duratracs. Essentially, the same exact setup as Big50 on here.

With the prices I've found online and amount of rebates/deals Discount Tire has, I think I'd only be spending a Few hundred more than what I wanted. I'm heavily leaning towards selling/returning the bora spacers, putting the RRO level kit on, with 0 offset wheels and 275/65/18 duratracs. I'll let you all know what I decide and post pics once I've got them installed.

Again, thanks for all the help and feedback. Have a great Thanksgiving everyone!
