Help needed - Transfer case not locking?

I took a small off road journey they other day onto a sand beach that leads to a gravel river bed. I slipped the mode into "SAND" and proceeded across the beach. The sand was 10-12 inches deep and as I progressed the vehicle started to slow down even though I was depressing the gas pedal. I eventually came to a stop (Shit I'm stuck). Tried rocking back and forth but no movement. My wife hopped out to take a look and while I was attempting to rock back and forth she said "none of the tires are moving".

I then selected "ROCK" mode and 4WD-Low and crawled out backwards until I was out of the deep sand. I then selected "AUTO" mode and drove off the beach. I tested "SAND" mode later and it seemed to be working.

Is it possible that the transfer case slipped out of gear causing me to go no where?

Has anyone experienced or heard of anything similar?

I know my car digs holes when its stuck on sand. Did your wife look at the tyres on both sides of the car?
Rock mode will lift the car to OR2 so that might have been enough to get you moving.
Next time try lowering your tyres.
Also in Sand mode if you are going too slow and it detects the wheels slipping it will cut power. I have found this can be overcome with more aggressive throttle, stop babying it.

Re: Help needed - Transfer case not locking?

Terrain Select calibrations do NOT automatically engage 4-LOW but rather they represent various traction control settings with permissive wheel spin and telling the car to engage ABS selectively. You have to manually select 4-LOW on 2014+ cars.

From what you are saying, it doesn't appear that you had 4-LOW engaged when you first selected SAND mode.

From browsing this forum, I know that 2011-2013 vehicles had some issues with SAND mode but that was addressed through software reflashes at some point. Your post doesn't indicate what model year vehicle you have.

Pre 2014 models only had Sand/Mud mode, Sand and mud were then seperated 2014 on.
The wheels would still spin when its not in 4-LOW.

I have a 2014 Limited with ORA2, Luxury and BFG T/A KO2 tires. I only went into 4-low to back out.

Yes. wife looked at both sides and after I commented that I probably should have gone faster she also said "stop babying it" LOL

When I get a chance to return to that beach I will try again with a little more gusto. I am planning a trip to Silver Lakes sand dunes in Michigan next summer, so if anything I will definitely find out then.
