How did this happen?

I was filling up my car today and noticed this giant chip in my rim. This the back left tire. The chip is located on one of the spokes towards the inside (Closer to the brake caliper). Im trying to figure out how a chip like this could even happen.

I did recently have quite the tire issue (read about that shitstorm here Best Tire for the Asphalt Loving Jeep). Could this chip have been caused by the dealership during their removal of my rims repeatedly?

Re: How did this happen?

Ouch. Only thing I can think of is a twirl large rock or debris just happened to hit the spoke. The debris movement plus a spinning wheel would have been a pretty good smack I guess.

Re: How did this happen?

Its just such odd placement. If it was on the front face of the rim that would make more sense but its location seems like that would be a 1 in a 10000000 shot.

What are the odds this was dealership caused? The did have to remove my rims and put on new tires no less than 4 times in less than a month

Perhaps a rock got caught in the caliper and then dislodged at just the right moment and caught the edge of the spoke? Still a million to one shot, but I am not sure how you damage it that way taking the wheel off. The gouge seems to be perpendicular to the spoke so the force would have to come parallel to the wheel (not perpendicular like if they slipped with a impact wrench).

What are the odds? Well, calculate how much time it was at the dealership and then calculate how much time it wasn't at the dealership. I'm sure it's been in your care more than the dealership.

Odds doesn't matter here. Shit happens. You didn't notice this issue right after dealing with the dealership.

Now stop trying to find blame on anyone else and get it fixed or don't.

Could of been a rock that was kicked over from another car.
