Unhappy I need to service my emergency brakes.


I had a change in my routine hooking up the jeep to the motorhome today, and as a result, I towed it with the emergency brake on by accident. Now when I push the pedal, I don't get the same resistance anymore, and it won't hold the car on a grade. It looks like there are cables that go to each rear wheel hub assembly. Does anyone know what it takes to service them? I'm assuming I will need new brake pad material. I don't know if I can do this myself, or if I will have to take it to the dealer, and what it will cost....

Hopefully just new pads. Feel the rotors for grooves. If you don't feel comfortable checking them... Many places offer free inspections. Let them figure it out and take it somewhere you feel comfortable or do it yourself.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. The brake pedal for regular driving is fine. The rotors didn't seem especially hot after I got to where I was going. It is the emergency/parking brake pedal that doesn't have the same feel now, and I think the two brake systems are seperate. I was hoping someone here had taken them apart before. I may just have to take it to the dealer and see what they say.

It should just need new parking brake shoes (for the drum section in the rotor) which look to run $80-100. New rotors maybe if they are very worn, another 140-190.

Do you know how difficult it is to get to those pads? Do I have to remove the calipers to get the rotors off to get to them? Thanks.

You would have to remove the caliper and rotor to see the parking brake pads. Should not be too difficult.

I really wish the Jeep chimes a warning sound when the parking brake is applied and the Jeep is in Reverse or Drive. It just sits there and blinks. Not sure why Jeep thought that there should be no warning chime.

Unfortunately, a chime would not have helped me since the Jeep was off and nobody was sitting in it...

This is where a service manual would come in handy, but it is probably only an adjustment. You could try searching the earlier WK forum as you may be lucky that the same setup is used in the WK2. Looking at the parts book, they seem to have the traditional manual adjusting screws built into the baking plate. There should be a rubber plugged slot that you remove and then can turn the adjuster to take up the slack. Attached is the figure from the parts book, number 7/8 is the adjuster.


I have a WJ and they had similar manual adjusters in the hub. To get at the parking brake shoes themselves, you removed the rotor, which can be a chore as there is often a groove worn inside. Replacing the shoes was a PITA due to the limited clearance and strong holding springs.

Just to clarify, the image I posed is the WK2 parking brake parts. It does have the manual shoe adjustment screw and there is no automatic adjusting mechanism. You may not need to take the wheel off to adjust the parking brake, although it may be more convenient. Certainly not the rotor. You should be able to locate the adjustment screw access slot at the bottom of the plate.

You may want to check brake shops to see what they would charge you to make the adjustment for you. You could get lucky.
