Re: Icon Dynamics 2.5" Coilover kit

I was dead set on these until The icon sales rep told me there would be substantial noise through the unibody from these. Can someone who has experience with these comment of this or better yet send me a pm so I'm sure to see the response. I only heard one guy who had em on say you get what you pay for, and he highly recommended them. I'de really like to know more…

Higher NVH...or Noise, Vibration and Harshness. Higher NVH is common when adding high performance suspension mods.

Re: Icon Dynamics 2.5" Coilover kit

Hi,

Great questions in this thread, as I'm learning more about the WK2.

With the Icon system, it doesn't appear like they lift the rear of the WK2, is that correct? I simply see a set of shocks, but no springs or spacers. I even downloaded the installation manual, and it doesn't speak to it.

Re: Icon Dynamics 2.5" Coilover kit

I believe that the warning of increased noise is regarding transfer through the suspension components, as Icon use metal bushings rather than urethane or rubber.

The upper joint on my Icons liked to groan a bit too, but this wasn't evident in the cabin with the windows up. However this was on a ladder framed 4WD...

Cheers,
Steve

I think you're right, although they say the rear shocks support up to 1" lift, same as the Bilstein 5100 rears.

Re: Icon Dynamics 2.5" Coilover kit

I see..."more noise through the unibody" translates to, "this performance suspension will likely make noises you will worry about." As said, like most performance suspensions do. Nature of the beast I suppose...

But Icon can't even get the model year right for the WK2 listed for this kit, so I wouldn't be that confident in the outcome or lack of noises that result from it, for that matter.

Re: Icon Dynamics 2.5" Coilover kit

Race car suspension makes race car noises.

Re: Icon Dynamics 2.5" Coilover kit

Anyone that has towed with their WK2 understands the added NVH due to the unibody. It drove me nuts until I padded the drop hitch to absorb some of the noise.

Looking at the "features" of the kit it uses rod end bearings. This is likely where the added NVH comes from. In general when you use these over bushings, you have more noise...but they are more heavy duty.

So you actually have the Icons installed on your WK2? Do you like them? is there much noise or vibration in the vehicle with the windows up or down? I would expect you feel like you have better control on the highways or blasting down dirt roads, is that the case? I would definitely take off my sway bars if I was running Icons. Is yours still on?

Re: Icon Dynamics 2.5" Coilover kit

Sorry for being unclear. I was just providing some commentary regarding Icons in general... my experience with them was in context with another vehicle. There wasn't much coming in from WK2 owners, so I figured something was better than nothing. I really only wanted to expand on the suggestion of noise increase.

However on the IFS vehicle I had them on up front, the performance was excellent... but part of that was the hydraulic bump stops I got from them as well. How this translates to a very different platform... without the progressive bump stops ... I don't know. The company does appear to put a lot of effort into development.

I hope you do get them, and that they are totally awesome

Cheers,
Steve

I'm sure whatever vehicle you had was a great setup if you had icon coil overs and hydraulic bump stops! Would you get them despite the noise if you didn't have air suspension? I actually just pulled the trigger on bilstein 5100s bc I couldn't get a response from anyone actually running them on a WK2 and the guys at icon successfully turned me off they made it sound so bad. I'm sure I won't have near the bottoming resistance with the 5100s as I would with the dampening and beefy coils of the icons or the performance but at least I'll retain a quiet ride, get a lift, and improve the suspension a little for a fraction of the price.

I had icons front/rear on my 05 Tacoma trd off-road and that along with their add a leaf spring for the rear made the vehicle amazing off road. I also removed the sway bar which really helped too. Sometimes I miss having a truck the weighed almost 1000lbs lighter, floated over sand, handled better in snow, could blast through the desert and could get the wheels off the ground without even bottoming out the suspension. But at least the jeep is more luxurious, gets better gas milage, maybe looks better, and has more horse power. It would be a tuff call if I was to put my 2014 Limited up against the 2016+ Tacomas though. They have a new engine and transmission.

Maybe I just need to modify the jeeps suspension a little and I'll forget all about the weight…
