Is rust here normal?

I've noticed that there is rust on part of my wheel on my new Overland. Is this normal or something I should get taken care of?

Re: Is rust here normal?

That's the brake hub.

They get rusty on a lot of vehicles including high end BMWs.

I doubt the dealer will do anything for you. You can bring it to their attention though...you never know.

If it was mine, I'd probably take the wheels off & repaint the hubs with a high heat rust paint so that they all looked the same.

Yeah, this is probably what I'll do. I want to get the wheels powder coated and paint the calipers black anyway, so might as well go all the way. Thanks for the input!

Re: Is rust here normal?

The coating on the non-machined parts of the rotor are just to protect it in the supply chain, not to make it pretty over its life..

You can use your caliper paint on it, clean up the rust first.

That part of the rotor doesn't get insanely hot.

Re: Is rust here normal?

I hit that part of my rotors with a coat of Rust-Oleum before the rust set in. As has been mentioned, for the most part, the manufacturers do not coat that part of the brake rotor with any sort of protective coating, so eventually, they all rust......

Re: Is rust here normal?

Centric and other brands of rotors offer coatings on the hubs and venting to prevent rust as seen. Most cars do not come with this from the factory, though of the 7 vehicles I have owned ranging from $28-82,000, only the Jeep has actually exhibited rust on the non-braking surface of the rotors. It's not a big deal but is aesthetically annoying.

Re: Is rust here normal?

Yeah that's not the wheel lol.

Rotor rust is 100% normal and pretty much all cars do it over time. Just look behind the wheel of any car out there. You would be amazed at just how terrible rotors and other brake components look on some cars.
